Yeah, I'm in education and Harriet definitly would have gotten in trouble and most likely sent in for an evaulation from the school psychologist (however, she does go to one but I can't remember if it was before or after this scene).
Also in the book, Miss Elson went to the door to grab more paper towels so her back was turned when Marion spilled more paint (but in the book it was ink) on Harriet. Also in the book, the teacher actually sends Harriet home to take a bath...the book was set in the '60s so that was more realistic then than it was in the '90s.
