The scene where Marion read the notes to everyone

Did it ever bother anybody else that when they read the notes about themselves they totally paraphrased what Harriet wrote to make it sound way worse?

Like they turned "Some of Janie's experiments really creep me out. I wonder if she'll grow up to be a million IQ genius or a total nutcase" into "Janie really creeps me out. I wonder if she'll grow up to be a total nutcase."

It's like, a lot of what she wrote wasn't even that bad, but they way they read it made all the notes sound way worse.

It's just always bothered me.

I know what you mean, as I was just thinking about this movie the other day. Despite the fact that I haven't watched it in years. The funny thing is when Janie read what was written about her, she paraphrased it in the same way that Marion was paraphrasing everyone else's.

What really disturbs me about that scene is how they butchered the presentation. In the book it is JANIE who finds and starts to read the notebook. But I suppose the director didn't think kids could deal with a character with that level of complexity. Janie read it, after all, out of curiosity, not as an attempt to "get Harriet", as it appeared in the movie.

I think she was just skimming, and read the bad part outloud because it caught her eye.

~oh, golly gee damn.

It's just like in life when you revieve compliments you don't think much of them, but when someone insults you it's so much more powerful.

Ha ha I just remember how evil Marion Hawthorn read those damn notes. There is one look she gives Harriet where you're like "Oh snap! **** has hit the fan."
