it seemed as if they were totally uninvolved with her and NEVER once asked her what was happening at school. and i thought it was terrible and humiliating how they had her teacher check her for her notebook.
I don't think they were stupid, but I defiantly agree they were uninvolved with her. Yes, they were busy, I understand that, but I still think they could have tried to pay attention to her. They just didn't seem interested in what was going on her life at all.
I always used to feel bad for Harriet when the teacher humiliates her in front of the whole class and they're all laughing at her. But her parents said that she'd done "zero school work in days" so maybe they thought if the teacher checked for her notebook she'd get some work done, so they were doing a good thing. However the teacher should have checked in private, not in front of everyone.
Her parents were awful. Have a nanny because you're busy? Fair enough. But then to totally ignore the huge disruption of her leaving on your daughter? Not so cool. And completely ignoring when she's undergoing bullying? Pretty damned bad.
Also, parents who *love* their children don't just assume they're being lazy when their previously good grades suddenly go south.
I don't know if this scene is in the movie, but when she threw the shoe at her dad in the book, I put it down and cheered.
