I want to say mild retardation, but I don't think she'd be living alone then, I think she was just a simple minded woman who NEVER learned to think for herself, a problem STILL going on today for many.

I think it was indeed mild mental retardation. Why wouldn't she be living alone if she was only mildly impaired??
