Wish it was set in the 1500s

Although I somewhat understand Branagh's decision to set this one in the 1700s rather than the 1500s, I kind of wish he kept it true to the time period of the play. This truly is the most authentic adaptations of Hamlet ever put on film aside from the fact that it's time period is clearly way more modern than the original play. It still works, but the gritty setting of the Mel Gibson version is definitely more authentic to me, which is why prefer his film. Still, if only this one kept the original setting and time period it probably would have surpassed the Mel Gibson film.

The 19th century setting is a huge plus in my opinion. A dark and gloomy medieval-ish setting may have seemed more authentic but it wouldn't have fit Branagh's choice of style, and I believe it's that very style (brightly lit, high energy) that allowed the movie to stay engaging and entertaining for four entire hours. A four hour movie in the style of Gibson's or Olivier's Hamlet would have put me to sleep.

This adaptation was actually set in the 1800s and the original play is set in the 1200s.
