the only problem i have with this movie

This movie is actually one of my favorites. As a vocalist and songwriter, it touches me on a lot of levels...
but when she's rehearsing "God give me Strength" for the first time with Jay, the microphone is so distractingly low...i know that sounds kind of petty, but it makes her do these awkward and pointless moves while she's singing. Again, in a word-distracting. just my opinion anyway...

i can usually get through that part of the movie by either leaving the room and just listening or distracting myself with something else...

again, just my opinion...otherwise it's a great film!

Well, I think they did that to make it awkward for a number of reasons...

1- She's never performed for anyone, except years back that contest and then again when she won...

2- She's doubtful of her own ability

3- She's already attracted to the man who is "Judging" her on producing this, so she's nervous.

This is a movie specially written to be for those of us who make music. I personally don't feel anyone who is not in the industry will ever get all the aspects of it, like what you noticed, and be able to connect as we can. It's one of my favorites also, I have my own "Jay" to deal with, and there's nothing in the world that compares to having such a relationship. Deep as hell, wonderful caring love, but so damn moody and depressed. Those guys make the BEST artists, but suffer so for it, as do the women who love them.

i'm the woman version of "jay", but about 5 times less intense...only. i completely understand his role. damn.

Spot on Barb! That is a perfect scene and a great look into Edna's psyche.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

It's interesting...that' my favorite part of the movie! I think it is so powerful. First of all, the song and lyrics by Bacharach (spelling?) are incredible. The real singers voice conveys her pain perfectly, and Jay's reactions are so realistic.
Who hasn't felt those emotions after a serious break-up? I feel very deeply about this song, and I love the music. I think Ileana Douglas did an fantastic job of really looking like she was truly singing/feeling the songs.

My thoughts, EXACTLY!

'God Give Me Strength' was written by Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach ~
