Were they trying to make John Gotti look like a non-racist?

Seriously why were there so much talk on race. Was it because of the incident that happened in jail? Just in case nobody know I'll explain. They said Gotti called one of his fellow immates a N-Word and the Black beat him up to a bloody pulp. And the incident happened in 96 {when the movie was released}. So were trying to make Gotti look like he wasnt a rasict because in real life he was.

I saw Gotti talk to Victoria and some other family member when he was in jail, and he used the n-word alot. In the movie, he told "quack-quack" that it was one world and we were the same (regarding to race).... didn't really make sense, probably trying to humanize him for the film
