shareThe South remained what it was after the Civil Rights legislation of the 1960's was passed. Legally they couldn't discriminate so openly anymore, but they were still resentful and racist....still are to a certain degree.
His first wife was a snobbish southern belle of sorts. Part of the high society in Jackson, who were quite racist towards the black community 25-30 after the Civil Rights movement. For her husband to take up such a case, well to her circle of peers it's scandalous and to her that's humiliating.
I think those are unfair assumptions about the modern day South.
