shareThey never really establish it. I think it just adds to the whole twisted, depraved nature of the setting in the story & the visual aspect of the film itself. Think about it...
It's one thing to have a scene with two cops interrogating a young teenage girl about a murder.. it would just be something to move the story forward and it's easily forgettable or disacknowledged; but it's more disturbing -- not to mention effective, when afterwards you are surprised with something you didn't see coming.. and that's what makes you remember great movies like this one.
It's so underrated.

exactly and that's why this whole film is so unforgettable, because it has such unique and striking things about it. so many striking and unique visuals and lines and things that happen. it's a very unique film. I can't think of another film that's quite like it. I can just think of films that are kind of like it like Kids, Bully, Kalifornia, True Romance, a little bit.
