Similar movies, please?

Hello, I immensely enjoy this movie. I watched it in 1998 on TV and ever since I'm a huge fan of geese, I truly love and adore them.

Are there any similar movies which are as moving, enchanting, heart-warming and tear-jearking as Fly Away Home, preferably featuring animals (birds, geese)?

For a start, I say The Horse Whisperer is also a very good Americana movie with quite an intense atmosphere. Moreover, The Black Stallion comes to mind (also directed by Carroll Ballard.

Any other movie? Thanks a lot for your input lads and gents! :)

Whale Rider moved me in a similar way to Fly Away Home, and I've watched both in the last month.

reply

Thanks a lot for your input! I'll put it on my list. Sounds very promising! You're referring to Whale Rider (2002), I presume? Just checking on IMDb.

Yes, I'm craving and longing for (the few) movies, that can actually inspire people, leave you with a great uplifting feeling, and provoke something, stir something so deep in your soul that you go outside and say, for example on Fly Away Home: "Yes, I want to do something for nature and wildlife. I want to do something with geese, help them, become their friend, find similar minded people, soulmates."

Any other similar inspiring movies?

reply

Just have to bump this thread again. Does anyone have some more recommendations of movies that are as enchanting and heart-warming as Fly Away home, featuring kids and animals? (like Free Willy, The Horse Whisperer etc) Thanks! :)

Two Brothers (2004) was a very good movie. About two tiger cubs seperated, 'adopted' (one by a young boy), and their meeting a year later. Not in my top 10 like Fly Away Home, but still very good, heartwarming, and with a good message.

"Milo, I've told you again and again - please, don't walk on the chickens!"

reply

Thanks for your reply! I've seen Two Brothers, and I agree with you, it's not by far in my Top Ten list like Fly Away Home is. Do you have any other recommendation you could name?

Then again, I believe Fly Away Home is such a special movie, there isn't any other movie like it out there :) Uplifting, a good message (life is beautiful!), love of animals and nature, enchanting majestic creatures like geese, a good story, great characters, abscence of an (unnecessary imho) love interest story, and an amazing tearjearking soundtrack. What a combination! :)

Yeah have you seen Eight Below (shot in Antarctica and related to slid dogs).amazing film and inspiring as well...another amazing film is DUMA..

reply

Hello! Thanks for your input! Yes I've seen Duma, it's a nice movie, just didn't move me in a similar way like Fly Away Home did. I'll have a look into Eight Below, thanks! :)

Restless Spirits (1999)

Thanks. The plot of Aviators sounds kinda fascinating!

The Bear (1988) is another great films about animals in peril.

Can't believe this got under 7 out of 10 on here. When that song kicks in at the end , it gets me everytime.

reply

Thanks for your comment! Yes the Bear from 1988 is great as well! Bart the bear rocks! :)

About the song: Exactly. When the 10.000 miles song kicks in at the beginning and end of the movie, it just shines, I cry my eyes out like in no other movie. It deserves 10 out of 10 in every aspect. It's haunting and moving and has an everlasting impression on you, much more than these forgettable overrated movies like Titanic or Avatar. Ok Titanic got a beautiful soundtrack, but nowhere near Fly Away Home.

Hello Sandol70,

I have a few suggestions!

1) Heart-warming and tear-jearking with animals:

-The Black Stallion (1979)
-The Horse Whisperer (1998)
-Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
-Fluke (1995)
-All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989)
-Whale Rider (2002)

2) Tear-jearking and sometimes heart-warming:

-The Champ (1979)
-My Girl (1991)
-The Road Home (1999)
-The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
-Always (1989)
-Philadelphia (1993)
-Field of Dreams (1989)
-Life Is Beautiful (1997)
-Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
-The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
-City of Angels (1998)
-The Green Mile (1999)
-Hotel Rwanda (2004)
-Steel Magnolias (1989)

I was never one to hold grudges Jeffrey. My father held grudges, I will always hate him for that.

reply

Thanks! I've seen

-The Black Stallion (1979)
-The Horse Whisperer (1998)
-All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989)
-My Girl (1991)
-The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
-The Green Mile (1999)

From your list. They're great movies! But they don't move me the way Fly Away Home moves me. I think it has to do with the soundtrack and that 10.000 miles song from the movie, as well. Will have a look at the other movies in some time.

This is a 3 year old thread, but I'll add to it... for anyone who happens to be reading.

Whale Rider (young teen girl in New Zealand and whales; really emotional)

The Secret of Roan Inish (young girl in Ireland and seals; warm, quiet, and enchanting)

Dolphin Tale (young teen boy and a dolphin; very warm and entertaining family movie)

The Big Year (3 men try to view as many birds as they can in one year; This is not about animals in the same sense, but it has an old-fashioned warm-hearted feel)

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill (Documentary about a guy in San Francisco who started befriending and looking after a wild flock of parrots, which were escaped pets. This is a very warm and philosophical documentary that is a lot more fun than it sounds. One of the parrots dances when he plays the guitar.)

Thanks for the recommendations! I've bought and seen Dolpin Tale 1 and 2, great movies indeed.
Have to watch the other ones. But it's difficult to top the story, characters, atmosphere, and a song like 10.000 miles from Fly Away Home. :)

reply

No problem.

Hopefully this thread will help you find a few more favourite movies.

I like the documentary "Winged Migration" that covers migrating flocks of birds on all 7 continents. Some fly thousands of miles every year during all kinds of weather.

I remember one scene where a bird landed on a navy ship in the middle of the ocean by itself at night. After resting, it took off again on its migration.

You can find it on You Tube.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

Oh yes, I've seen Paulie in the meanwhile! It's really heartwarming and I even shed some tears while watching it, great movie! Hachi sounds interesting, will watch it in some time.

I still can't believe that Fly Away Home is not in the Top 250 list. I think it has to do with Amy being a bit of a spoiled brat. But aside from that you've got a fantastic movie there!

reply

Everything done by Carroll Ballard.

It's not the gesse the main point of the movie. It's the interaction between the insides and the outside, men/women and nature.

reply

For me it's very well the geese as a main point. Would it be other birds or animals, I wouldn't be so fascinated about the movie, and I say that as someone who didn't care about geese before watching that movie. After that, I fell in love with geese. Interaction between humans (love stories, chick flicks, whatever) you see in so many other movies, it's ridiculous. Animal movies are much more interesting than that.

reply

But yeah thanks I will have a look at more movies done by Carroll Ballard.
