Is Nicole the worst lead character ever?

After all the hell she put every single character through, nothing she did was as bad as watching Margo be taken away TO BE RAPED, running off and sulking, then later treating Nicole like a common whore FOR BEING RAPED BY HER BOYFRIEND! That actually happened!

Then later when Margo comes over, instead of confronting her or simply just saying why she's upset she sits there and ignores her only chirping in to make snide comments just to throw a tantrum outside and blame Margo for ruining her relationship. Boo Hoo Nicole! I'm sure Margo's sorry that she didn't stop and consider how you must feel after being raped by your boyfriend!

How did Margo not just beat the *beep* out of her when she spoke to her outside? I would have punched the bitch!

She just stood there and watched her be yanked by the hair, forced into saying something she clearly didn't *beep* want to, then be literally picked up and dragged away. How the hell can anyone confuse that with consent? (Besides David)

I wonder if she thought about Margo's brutal rape as she was crying in her bed feeling sorry for herself and wondering why everything bad happens to her? Or when she wrote her dad that stupid note, or even the next day at school? No wait, of course she wasn't because even when Gary asks about her she makes a comment under her breath about Margo being sick.

SHE WAS RAPED!!! Nicole stood there and let it happen instead of intervening. We all know that if she were to storm inside and demand Margo's release, David would have complied.

Not to mention, NICOLE gave David the code to get inside the house.
NICOLE was the one who saw that David had a violent side, yet still chose to let him into her family's life. Her irresponsible, selfish, weak behavior was the cause of ALMOST all the misfortune.

I'd like to finish by adding how much I hated the part toward the end when Toby is shot at by the dude with the gun, Nicole, having heard the gunshots screams his name is this hysterical, annoying, squeal which just pisses me off. I can't believe how much I hated Nicole.

My rewrite would have been not so much for Nicole as for those around her.

Laura wants a daughter of her own - "Nicole doesn't count," she says - but Steve is too busy to make that happen. So she goes to David, and threatens to have him busted on statutory rape charges unless he "does it" with her. David agrees, and then Steve gets suspicious but can't prove anything. So he "does it" with Margo to get back at Laura. Nicole discovers both affairs and is so distraught that she tries to commit suicide, but Toby finds her and saves his sister's life by calling 911. So Nicole decides on revenge of a different color - she gives her brother makeup lessons...

NICOLE: ...Okay, now for your lip gloss -
TOBY: (giggling) Wait a second, boys don't wear lip gloss!
NICOLE: (also giggling): Well, this boy is going to...! (both burst out laughing)

Then, she gives him kissing lessons...

NICOLE: ...You know how Kaiser licks your face when you're playing with him? Well, would you believe that's how some boys kiss a girl? C'mere...(gives him a big, loving smooch)...That's how you kiss a girl. (He returns the picture-perfect smooch)

All of this doesn't exactly endear Toby to David, as you might imagine. In fact, he picks Toby up from school and then tries to hunt him down in the woods, but as they near the Walker residence, Nicole hears them and bolts off to save her brother's life.

Ultimately, after David is killed by Steve, Laura reveals that she's pregnant - with twins (a boy and a girl)! One small hitch: the twins aren't Steve's...they're David's!

What do you think? Better? Worse? About the same?

I'm sorry but this statement is as dumb as the way Nicole behaved in the movie. David and his friends were bunch of psychotic rapists and murders. They wouldn't have stopped themselves from violating Margo because Nicole stormed into the house. All that would have accomplished is Nicole possibly getting raped too or David taking it out on Margo because Nicole found out.

It sounds to me like you're forgetting the fact that Nicole was a teenage girl experience her first "serious" relationship. Nicole was stupid for how she acted, but that's what your first love can do to you.

She didn't know? He viciously grabbed Margo by the hair, pulled it hard and demanded that she says she wanted him. He then picked up the CLEARLY terrified girl and threw her over his shoulder.

Anyone who wasn't a total retard could have told this was not consensual.

Obviously she didn't know since she was later accusing Margo of betraying her by sleeping with her boyfriend. Nicole probably thought she was witnessing Margo engage in some kind of role play sex act with Logan and David. Doesn't make her any less stupid for coming to that conclusion instead of assuming the more logical answer that she was witnessing her best friend about to be raped, but most girls Nicole's age don't display a large amount of intelligence when it comes their first boyfriend.

The entire movie Margo is portrayed extremely promiscuous..aka slutty. Every time David and Nichole are hanging out with Margo and her bf they were always practically violently making out all over each other...David and Nichole look at each other and smile as in ha your friends a skank. Then the scene where she is trying to seduce Nichole's dad oh and flirting with David.....I think Nichole knew her friend was promiscuous and took that into consideration when viewing her friend kissing David...thru a f'ing window btw...I doubt she saw him pulling her hair or her crying. Not saying just bcuz a girl is promiscuous she deserves nonconsensual sex I'm just saying that played into Nichole's perception of David and Margo's interaction! Idiots like you should stop nitpicking stupid things like this. Keep in mind she's 16...David was her first and she's witnessed her friend being skanky.....okay I'm done.

Um, if Nicole is watching the entire thing...she IS seeing everything that's going on. Through an OPEN window even. She does see David grab her by the hair, and Margo crying. It doesn't matter whether Margo was 'slutty' or not, it was obvious she was being attacked by David.
How she could think that was consensual is inexplicable to me.
So, we're not idiots. There's no reason to insult people on a message board.

I always thought they should have made it clearer that Nicole couldn't hear them speak. I assumed she did, as nothing made anyone think that she didn't (until Nicole gets angry at Margo later).
They should have showed her straining to hear them, or have her just looking through a closed window or some such.

It's a MOVIE!!!! Oh, also a movie made in 1996....give the film some slack geez. Honestly, movies aren't meant to be perceived differently by different people seeing how we all don't have the same perception. What I'm trying to get at is just because we knew David was forcing margo doesn't mean Nichole did. Does the main character always see everything the audience does?!? HELL NO. This is something that honestly doesn't even matter. It doesn't effect the plot or story whatsoever. I just don't know how you don't see it.

The way the movie showed Nicole's facial expressions certainly implied she heard every word. And even if she couldn't hear a peep, the fact that Margo was weeping when David grabbed her should have been a tipoff to her.

Her expressions were due to seeing Margo get picked up and carried to Davids' bedroom. She wasn't close enough to hear what was being said or to see Margo's face. Only the audience saw that. From her POV it looked like sex.

So not only is she a selfish, thoughtless *beep* who only cares about herself, but she is clearly too dumb, stupid and retarded to read simple body language. David forcefully grabs Margo by the hair and pulls her closer, she is clearly distressed and scared, it's painfully obvious she's not into it, and Nicole interprets this as Margo being a skanky boyfriend thief? Even after she shows up at her door saying "He forced me, he made me do it!"

Its hard to read body language at that distance, she couldn't see Margo's facial expressions, hear what was being said or see that David was pulling her hair. She should have listened to Margo when she tried to tell her she was raped though there is no excuse for that but sadly disbelieving rape victims is very common.

I agree, she clearly saw David grab Margo's hair harshly...as we see Nicole wince when David does this. Then Margo CRIES!
And she had to have heard David yell "NOW!"

She wasn't that far from David & Margo. She was just at the window. And Nicole did wince, at something.
If not at the dialogue, it was at David & Margo messing around perhaps.

I'm curious, where did the director say this? DVD commentary?
If this is the case, I really think the film did a poor job in conveying this to the audience.

Nicole was only a victim once, when David hit her & beat up Gary.
Then she was a volunteer. She took David back.
She knew what he was, she just didn't want to believe it
She even saw what was going on at the party, and didn't even try to help her or call the police. She was a moron all around.

Yeah, I think Nicole knew what happened but was in denial and wanted to blame her friend. Just like she thought her dad beat the crap out of David, even when he said he only talked to him.

Agree OP! I saw this movie when I was about 12 and even then I thought that was so effing wrong and wondered why on earth Nicole was mad at Margo and not comforting her.

I got the impression Nicole was terrified. To be honest, if I were Nicole I wouldn't have gone in there either.
She'd seen how insane Logan was, and that he clearly wanted to attack her.

However, she SHOULD have run to her car & called for help! She had a car phone!
