Is Norm simple?

I just watched the movie for the first time today, and I must admit I like it, I thought the role of Margie was so refreshing, I never seen that played before and she did it to perfection. Something though came to mind, watching the movie I had the impression that Norm was a bit simple, just slower then the rest.

Not in the sense that he's mentally disabled or anything.

He's a small town guy who likes painting birds and fishing and taking care of his wife and maybe doesn't take a lot of interest in what else is going on in the world.
