I guess Jerry didn't love Jean.

My guess is that he only married her for the money seeing how rich her father is.
And the disconnection he shows his son. Probably knocked her up because she wanted a kid or an accidental conception.
If there was any love, then he wouldn't have had her kidnapped.

Humans are not the only species on earth.
We just act like it.

The character Jerry is incapable of loving anyone. He is only interested in his own self. Since it is fiction and their backstory isn't addressed he could have married Jean for any of a number of reasons and we can never know.

True.

Yeah, he didn’t even think about how his son felt until asked about it.

When he smiled and said hello at the girl in the counter at the dinner where they were just discussing his wife’s ransom shows he doesn’t care.

I didn’t notice all this until I watched it again. He really is a sociopath.

reply

I'd say he's more of a psychopath. He does have the ability to pretend to care and act the way he knows he should act in certain situations and he plans ahead and does things in a calculated way. Stupid, maybe, but he does try to plan.

reply

Sociopath and psychopath are the same thing

https://www.britannica.com/story/whats-the-difference-between-a-psychopath-and-a-sociopath-and-how-do-both-differ-from-narcissists

"Among persons who display APD, those called psychopaths are distinguished by a nearly complete inability to form genuine emotional attachments to others; a compensating tendency to form artificial and shallow relationships, which the psychopath cynically exploits or manipulates to benefit himself; a corresponding ability to appear glib and even charming to others; an ability in some psychopaths to maintain the appearance of a normal work and family life; and a tendency to carefully plan criminal activities to avoid detection.

Sociopaths, in contrast, are generally capable of developing a close attachment to one or a few individuals or groups, though they too generally have severe difficulties in forming relationships. Sociopaths are also usually incapable of anything even remotely resembling a normal work or family life, and, in comparison to psychopaths, they are exceptionally impulsive and erratic and more prone to rage or violent outbursts. Accordingly, their criminal activities tend to be spur-of-the-moment rather than carefully premeditated."

reply

Like I said, they’re the same thing. They both refer to ASPD.

Researchers are always flip flopping on what characterizes a sociopath vs psychopath. Some say psychopaths are calculated and controlled, others say psychopaths are erratic and impulsive. It’s largely a meaningless term used by armchair psychologists, not actual experts.

reply

Both being forms of ASPD doesn't make them the same.

I'm trying to get away from arguing online, so I'll just leave it at that. LOL.

reply

Haha You’re not getting the last word, because I am the final arbiter of truth. I mean, if we are going to discuss facts let’s keep it factual. Psychopathic traits are used in addition to ASPD (formerly known as sociopathy).

So 1) all psychopaths are sociopaths, but not all sociopaths are psychopaths
2) only a qualified psychiatric professional is able to diagnose someone with ASPD and psychopathic traits.

I still loved the movie though, Jerry's problems and all
