The logical assumption would be that nobody ever found the money, because civilizations could rise and fall before anyone had a reason to dig in that one spot and pay attention to what they dug up.
It was only buried in the snow, not in the ground. When the snow melted in the spring the case containing the money would have been plainly visible from the road, and someone would have stopped to have a look at it. Even before the snow melted, someone might have decided they wanted that ice scraper that he stuck in the snow to mark the spot, and stumbled across the money in the process.
