conversatn between caravaggio and almasi

Hi, I just watched the movie for the first time. I watched it in English but being a non-native some bits slipped away, such as the conversation between Caravaggio and Almasi on his bedside, towards the end, when Almasi is telling him how he took Katherine to the cave.

I missed a few details such as who does Caravaggio think Almasi is? Why does he hold him responsible for his thumbs being cut off? Why does Almasi say something like "and all because i had the wrong name"?

I`d be really grateful if someone would shed a light on this...

It's been a long time since I last saw The English Patient but if I remember correctly, Caravaggio initially thinks that Almasy is a spy working for the Germans. Caravaggio was caught because of the photographs that were taken by Rommel's spy, who managed to cross the desert and infiltrate the British headquarters using the maps that Almasy had given to the Germans in exchange for their assistance (plane & fuel).

Almasy was Hungarian so his foreign name automatically made him a suspicious person, particularly to the British. That's why he couldn't get help from those officers. He had the "wrong name".
