the scene prior to the church paintings

Kip plants small votives on the path from the villa to his hut that lead Hanna to him. What were the votives made of? Anyone? They look like large empty snail shells possibly filled with candle wax.
A small detail but I loved it.

I intend to live forever. So far so good.

reply

Kip is a sheikh and as Indians burn votives to celebrate/religious works.
Or just maybe Kip wanted to surprise Hanna.

reply

Kip is a sheikh

Um, a sheikh and a sikh are two very different things.

reply

According to the book the lights were snail shells filled with oil.

reply

thank you; it certainly looks like snail shells. i haven't read the book in ages.

I intend to live forever. So far so good.

He is not 'Sheikh', but 'Sikh'. It is a religion in India and the members are known as Sikhs. Their name usually ends in 'Singh'.

He used the olive oil that Hana gave him as hair oil, to burn the lights.

reply

For the sake of argument, one can add that this scene has reference to the Indian festival of light, Diwali, as it is called.

reply

Unless they are female. Then their last name is Kaur. And that is a gorgeous scene!

reply

so everyone of that religion has the same surname? weird..

reply

Well, it is a weird religion....

I wondered if Almásy knew of Kip's surprise that he told Hana to go sleep so she would get out of the room?
