After almost 20 years of putting it off, I've finally watched this movie
I was in college, really getting into independent and foreign films. I just watched Shine and loved it. I was hoping to watch the English Patient, especially after it won a lot of Oscars, but I just never got around to it. I had several starts, but it seemed like such a heavy and dry movie, that it felt like taking a hard class or going to church. So, I kept putting the film off.
Anyways, after nearly 20 years, I finally sat through the whole thing--albeit in pieces. I would watch 30 minutes of it, then get frustrated and bored. Put it off again, pick it up again. I kept asking myself, "What's the point of the movie??" I made it 2/3's of the way through the movie about 2 months ago, and I almost gave up on it. Finally, today, I decided to finish it. And, wow, I'm glad I did.
The ending made the movie worth it. Such a tragic ending, and I kept feeling my emotions well up, my heart strings tugged at. I then realized why this won so many Oscars. I know a lot of people don't seem to think this movie is that great, and I can definitely see their points. But, the ending did it for me. First film I've ever seen that went from complete bore-fest to epic story telling in the span of just half an hour.
I just wanted to share this story, because the English Patient is the only movie I've kept putting off for so long, and it was definitely a bucket item list for me. Thanks for reading.
