Carvaggios problem with Almasy

I've never read the book but why did Carvaggio hate Almasy

reply

It's explained in the film: Almasy betrayed secrets to the Nazis in order to obtain a plane and fuel to return to Katharine in the desert. The secrets he betrayed led to the torture and murder of some, including Carvaggio whose thumbs were cut off during his torture.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

And in the novel his collaboration with the Nazi's was more extensive than the pragmatic reason for it in the film

Just for the record this is fiction. The closest the Germans got to Cairo was El Alamein, 149 miles north west of Cairo.
