One of the worst best pictures ever
Right up there with Shakespeare in Love as one of the worst "best picture" winners ever.
Just a stupid sissy romance, while Fargo was the superior movie.

I agree with Shakespeare in Love; but The English Patient was one of the best "Best Picture" winners and Fargo was hardly a competitor against it. Unlike what many people believed, I think there were not a single possibiliy that Fargo was ever going to win.
shareYawn! The boards of Best Picture winners always seem to have this same old, tiredly complaining thread on them.
This is a wonderful cinematic adaption of a Booker Prize-winning novel that was widely considered unfilmable around the time of production. Winning 9 Academy Awards in the most sweeping victory since 1987's The Last Emperor makes the OP's claim appear just plain ridiculous.🐭
I think The English Patient is a fine film, and has a lot going for it, but clearly Fargo has fared better over the years. As far as Oscars go, above poster is right -- pretty hard for a dark comedy like Fargo to go up against a classic "Hollywood" tale like TEP
