'The English Patient' is my nominee for worst-ever Best Picture winner.
I found it unwatchably boring. "Cimarron"(1931), my runner-up, is bad, but watchable.
Of course "Fargo" deserved the Best Picture Oscar for 1996.

I just watched it and I didn't like it either and totally agree Fargo should have won. But it wasn't the worst. Crash, Oliver!, A man for all seasons, Gigi, and Mrs. Miniver were worse.
But yeah, it beating Fargo is certainly a head-scratcher.

I did sixty in five minutes once...
Fair enough that many people does not like this movie, but I think it is a better film then "Fargo", though "Fargo" is a good movie, I like it quite a bit.
Also as far as worst-ever best picture winner for my part I would probably go with "Shakespeare in Love".
I loved the English patient.
Actually I'm very glad it won best picture, maybe you don't like because you don't like romantic flicks or at least you don't like this genre to win which is acceptable.
But see it this for a romance it's clearly one of the best modern romances.
I absolutely LOVE romantic flicks, especially epic, heartbreaking ones, yet still regard TEP as one of the most tedious, boring, wish-I-had-3-hours-of-my-life-back movies of all time.
"I gotta fever and the only prescription is more cow bell."
You should stay away from literate films and stick to Zac Efron movies.
shareMaybe it's a little longer than any other romance but it was needed to develop more the whole story and to make us get involved with the couple.
Another thing I loved here is the chemistry between Ralph and KST.
You really believe they belonged together also well in a more shallow note, I've never seen a romantic hero hotter than Ralph Fiennes.
Ralph here is just too sexy and handsome for words.
All my friends love Zac Efron, Liam a Hemsworth, Robert Pattinson and other pretty boys meanwhile I'm weird in my celeb crushes since they are Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, Daniel Day Lewis, Russell Crowe and well I only have one normal taste Chris Hemsworth
I loved The English Patient.
As far as "worst movies that got Best Picture award" goes here's my list:
1. Tom Jones (1963)
2. The Sound of Music (1965)
3. Rocky (1976) - though it's far from "bad movie" winning in front of "Taxi Driver", "All the President's Men" and especially "TV Network" is ridiculous
4. Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)
5. Out of Africa (1985)
6. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
The Greatest Show on Earth
Around the World in 80 Days
by far the two worst winners in history...
People weren't and still aren't ready for a David Lean-type epic romantic drama. I bolded the drama part, because this is a film that takes its own time to create amazing characters. It doesn't rush things, it lets it resonate throughout the two and a half plus hours. The music score, the scope of the photography, the direction, the acting. Everything in this film is pitch perfect. If you ever have the time and inclination, go back and really watch it. If some of the scenes - particularly the ending sequence when he finds her in the cave - if those scenes don't move you, then carry on and watch something else. But be warned, this is a wonderful masterpiece that deserves your time and effort.
shareTotally agree with this.
I couldn't say it better.
Well said Genesis1975! I'm watching The English Patient for the third time and absolutely love it. Great acting, producing, directing, and the music. . . . . oh, the music was incredible. This film is one of my all time favorites.
shareI absolutely adored The English Patient and I say it deserved to win best picture.
My picks for the worst Best Picture winner would either be Oliver! or Shakespeare in Love. Not necessarily bad films, but there were other movies in those years that were better such as 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968 (even though it wasn't nominated which makes me even more furious) or Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line in 1998.

Last films:
The English Patient: 10/10
Atonement: 10/10
Garden State: 7/10

I second that.
I was so, so, so bored throughout this movie!!!!
The English Patient is not even close to being the worst best picture list.
I would say Crash, Kramer vs Kramer, and Out of Africa are all films who won but probably are not terrific films. Even Meryl Streep wasn't completely happy with Out of Africa- but probably deserved to win because the standard of competition was very weak that year.
My pick for the weakest, of the ones I've seen at least, is The Greatest Show on Earth.
