Ms. Paltrow coud have been a silent star
Such an exquisitely expressive face. There are numerous scenes in which her face and body wordlessly radiate seamless changes in feelings, and even thoughts. It put me in mind of the great silent stars, tho' Ms. Paltrow's performance is of a more subtle nature; more nuanced. Her approach to the character was inspired. She seemed to have chosen to play her as a child. Her expressions of delight, confusion and consternation are adorably apt and youthful. It also lets the audience forgive Emma's immature foibles and missteps, her arrogance and even her casual cruelty. As a male, from the first time I saw her in "Seven", whenever her face collapses into tears, I feel an irresistible urge to hug and comfort her. This can be as powerful, or more, than a sexual appeal (tho' not bad in that department, either!) A hell of a performance, and a strangely hilarious take on Austen. Brava.
