Extremely similar 'Clueless' (1995)

I was watching this, and I was wondering if I was the only person that noticed that this movie is almost identical to the movie Clueless (except for the time period of course). The cute blonde trying to set up the chubby red head with Elton (they even used the same name). She makes her redhead friend refuse the farmer (the skateboarder in Clueless). So many similarities!

That's because 'Clueless' is an adaptation, albeit an updated one, of 'Emma'

What? Why?... Not the Phantom Menace?

Okay. So the movie Emma was based on the book Emma by Jane Austen and Clueless was also based on this book, but in a different time period. I am not really into books so I didn't know this. Thank you weaselfrance!

you're welcome!

I loved Clueless, I'll have to dig out my copy to re-watch it. It's been a while....

And there have been some other modern adaptations of old classics for example

Cruel intentions is the modern Dangerous Liaisons
10 things I hate about you it's. Shakespeare's the timing of the shrew
There is also O based on Othello also by Wiliam Shakespeare

There are others which kept the same name as the classic

Corolanious with Ralph Fiennes is a modern take in Shakespeare's play by the same name.
Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes is a modern take on Romeo and Juliet

She's All That is the modern Twelfth Night (Shakespeare).

I think you mean She's the Man.

The Paltrow Emma was originally planned as a modern remake too, but because Clueless got to the front of the queue before it, the producers decided to go back to period.🐭

Sometimes the crassness of Hollywood commerce actually contributes something worthwhile to culture, then. Nice to know!

I've even seen DVD covers for the Paltrow Emma where there's a tagline saying "if you loved 'Clueless,' you'll love 'Emma.'"

To be honest, that's how I got a young acquaintance of mine to start reading Austen. She loved BJD and Clueless, and telling her they were based on Austen got her interested. She read P&P and absolutely adored it, and moved on to Emma, which she also really liked.

So, on a certain level, it's a Good Thing.

i love clueless it my favourite adaption of Emma - better than the period dramas because it best captures the likeable yet flawed concept of the heroine.

i actually studied Emma the book versus Clueless at my final yr of school and its actually really clever how Hecklering adapts the book and its themes about women and class.

also love bridget jonses diary as an adaption of Pride and prejudice :)

Has anyone ever noticed how similar looking Jeremy Northam & Paul Rudd are in appearance? I was just re-watching Emma tonight on Netflix when it dawned on me that they look alike! Haha! Weird!

I'm watching the film right now. I've always known about Clueless's link to Emma, but the similarities still got me very excited. Not five minutes in I was basically like, "OMG this is just like Clueless!" and then when I saw Alan Cumming I got excited all over again. He's one of my favourite actors, and didn't realise he was in this. And he's Elton! *squee*
