sneak up between the propellers?

*minor spoiler*
I like this film but wasn´t that a lotta BS?
Can somebody explain how that maneuver was supposed to distract the pack?
I mean *iirc* their (Stingrays) position was known by the other ships during the briefing and so propably known then until the initiating of the maneuver.
Wouldn´t trackers just sum up 1&1 and go like "Hey they´re under that ship! Nice try."?

Probably, except they weren't tracking/seeing the tanker. They had probably only pinged at the depth of the Stingray. Or they might not be able to track the tanker 'cause it is lead?
I'm probably wrong though.

Actually it doesnt sound good at all.
Holdaro hasn't a clue what he is talking about.
Sorry Holdaro, not being rude but you don't.

Can't track a tanker because it is made of lead?!?!? WTF!?!

First off. you don't make ships with lead. Tankers or otherwise.

and even if you had a ship made of lead. A Sonar ping is SOUND. Sound will bounce off lead just as it would bounce off any other metal.

You are right about the "comming in between the screws" as being rediculous. It is.

But the tactic itself of using another contact to mask your own contact is very real. Just not in the way shown in the film.

A Loud noisy contact (like a tanker) can very easily blank out the sounds from a quiet contact (a Sub). It would blank out everything quieter than it all along that same line of bearing and a few degrees left or right of that bearing. So long as the Stingray stayed within a degree or two of being on the same line of bearing as the noisy tanker. it would be very difficult for the Orlando to pick it up.
Now this only works with Passive sonar whe the Orlando is listening to the sounds put out by the contacts themselves. This does not work when the Orlando is pinging away with active sonar which sends out pulses and recieves the echoes. It would recieve two seperate echoes unless the stingray was almost in direct contact with the Tanker. and the Orlando could still pick it out if the Orlando was close enough.

Sir, Put the mouse down slowly and step away from the keyboard!

Urm... thank you too. Although it wasn´t quite necessary to express it that way. That was too close to rude.
