He brushed (hit) a russian sub he was trailing. It hurt his career, thus the drunk weekend & the dick tatoo.

also his insubordinate attitude to the navy,
"that is not how a prospective captain acts"

but despite being unorthodox and bizarre tactics defeated the best the navy has to offer. (The men who felt his unorthodox tactics were ridiculous.)

just goes to show you.

The way I understood it was that after the exercise with the Stingray was over and he didn't have another boat, he would be assigned a desk job, and he wouldn't/couldn't accept that so he would have to retire.

Murmansk is a Major Soviet Naval port on the Kola Penninsula, Same Port that Red October Sailed from in "Hunt for Red October". Apparently the "Murmansk brushing incident" refers to an incident where He collided with a soviet sub just outside that port. The Navy refers to such incidents as Brushings. i.e. brushing up against another boat.

There have been numerous cases of brushing incidents documented in real life during the cold war.

Right. Remember, the submarines cannot actually *see* each other. Their equipment helps them detect where the other submarine is, but as they said in The Hunt for Red October "These things don't stop on a dime." You can cut engines, but because of the forward movement you already have and the ocean currents, you keep drifting. Two subs can't hear each other if they are running silent and they can drift into each other very easily.
