Not quite sure what Tom Dodge says in that scene but that picture has always reminded me of Cary Grant from the "Operation Petticoat" movie.

He does say Captain Boone, according to the DVD English subtitles.
I thought at first that was Cary Grant as well, given it's a submarine movie it would've been fitting. Though it's not him, I wonder if it supposed to allude to his character in someway. A Balao class submarine was the submarine in Operation Petticoat as well.

The original USS Balao (SS-285) was one of three US submarines that played the USS Sea Tiger in the film "Operation Petticoat". Whenever you see the pink sub, that's the Balao.
The other two subs were the Archerfish (SS-311), in all scenes where the sub was in standard gray and black, and the Queenfish (SS-393) in the opening and closing scenes (you can see the "393" on the conning tower).

I assume it's a missing scene. Look close at the first time he opens the cabin. Has photos in it, etc. Presumably there's some story where he finds out who previously commanded, or other history and is alluding to something specific, but we don't know what.
I love this, and would be fine with a 3 hour extended dance remix with all the deleted scenes. Was Lauren Holly's waterskiing, e.g., just for promos, or another deleted scene with story value?
