Operation Petticoat modernized?

This movie has many identical traits to the Cary Grant - Tony Curtis film "Operation Petticoat". Im not complaining I like the idea of that. Kelsy Grammer playing a similar role that Cary Grant did years back is great. Is this intentional or coincidence?

Both COs have a deadpan humor about them. I am a fan of Kelsey Grammer, but comparing anyone to Cary Grant is hard to do.

The crews of both DP and OP have commedians in their ranks, more so with DP.
OP is more of a racy situational comedy and DP is more slapstick.

This movie also reminds me of "The Wackiest Ship in the Army". A Navy officer is given command of a boat, but the boat is junk. The crew are misfits, and the officer gets them both into shape to carry out his mission.

Agreed. The only remote similarities between the two are that they are both comedies, and that there is a woman (or in the case of Operation Petticoat, several women) aboard. Well, that and the fact that they both involve WWII era submarines - of course, in Operation Petticoat, they actually are in WWII, whereas in Down Periscope, they're only engaged in a training exercise.
