Does one NEED to see the original before watching this...

Ok, first off I must say that The series never really interested me, Ive never been a fan or understood why there's so much hype surrounding these movies, I had read up on the film series some time ago with the full intentions of watching them all at some point, but I somehow never got around to it. it wasn't until I was lurking around on one of my favorite websites and came across a mention of a fanedit done of this movie, that my interest was peaked.

Im fascinated by learning as much about films in general as I can and I love to read about alternate versions that are out there, which I suppose is what appeals to me about fanedits. What caught my attention about this particular edit was that the director personally thanked the editor for his efforts! Apparently the studios butchered the film in post and the director was happy to see the film as he had originally intended. That's got to be the coolest thing ever! Judging by the reviews it seems a massive amount of work and love went into this and I am really interested in seeing it for that reason alone.

The problem is that Ive never seen any of the other films in the series except Wicked Prayer, which pretty much stood on its own. Usually when you get to the 4th or 5th sequel it doesn't much matter if you have seen the first one or not, so I didn't really worry about renting it at the time.

Earlier sequels though tend to follow on the heels of their predecessors, so I was curious whether or not this one can be viewed without seeing the first one. Can anybody give me a heads up on this?

This one is pretty much a standalone film so i'd say you're ok to watch it. The only thing even remotely relating to the first movie is the Sarah character, but overall very very lightly, almost in name only. She is played by a different actress altogether in this one too. If you do plan on watching the fanedit, i would highly recommend watching the miramax cut version first then the fanedit. The difference between the two versions is rather massive in my opinion and if you love comparing alternate versions (as you mentioned) then this is the best way to go.

You can actually watch this movie without understanding any other movies. The Crow is a different guy in each movie. Sarah was in both movies, but is older here so you really don't need to know anything about her in this movie.
