So has a women ever recived the metal of honor....
...for courage under fire?
shareThe Medal of Honor has been awarded to a woman once - Dr. Mary Walker, a Civil War surgeon. The award was for her outstanding services and not for being involved in combat leading to it being revoked in 1917 (along with over 800 other Medals of Honor awarded during the Civil War) when the rules were changed to only award it for combat. She continued to wear the medal until her death in 1919. Jimmy Carter restored the Medal to her in 1977. Dr Walker remains the only woman to have ever been awarded the Medal of Honor.
Medal of Honor to a woman? Yes.
Courage under fire? No.
Only one woman has been awarded the Medal of Honor? That's sad.
shareWhy is that sad?
It is only within the last few decades that women have taken roles that have exposed them to the possibility of being involved in combat. Since the Vietnam War ended, only 12 men have been awarded the MOH, nine of them posthumously.
Yeah, I agree. I'm not inclined to believe this is sexism, it's simply the fact that women are still rarely in combat. Add to that the rarity of the Medal of Honor being awarded at all and it's understandable.
