Desert Storm Veterans Sound Off!

As this was the first film made about this war, I thought that those who served there and saw this movie should sound off on this thread. List your branch and unit. I'll get us started.

U.S. Army, 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division

I don't think this was the first film that was about Desert Storm. "The Finest Hour" came out in 1992.

My Desert Storm service: MWSS-274 aboard USS Guam (LPH-9) as an embarked Marine.

I never saw "The Finest Hour" but I will have to check that out. Thanks for your service over there. We were in different areas but we got the job done and came home safely.

Yeah, I forget the details of the movie, except that the main male characters are good friends. One of them gets deployed to Kuwait. For some reason, there's a scene that takes place at the Dubai airport, which looked a lot like Dubai for some reason. Another is a scene where the second guy is dating the first guy's girlfriend.

I knew guys who had been in 1st Cav. I'm trying to think of some of their stories, but I'm drawing a blank. Later, when I got in the Army Reserves, I had people in my unit who had gone to 1st Cav to backfill those who went forward. They made it like it was a big deal to go to Ft. Hood while soldiers went forward.

First Cavalry had a bit of a strange history in Desert Storm. Most of the division was kept in reserve but then moved into action late during the ground war. Some units saw combat and some saw none at all.

My unit was quite involved. I was with 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment. We were the first unit of the 1st Cavalry to arrive in Saudi Arabia. We were used to patrol and monitor the border areas of Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

If you recall, there was a huge concern that Sadaam would invade Saudi Arabia before we could get enough troops there and to be in a position to stop him. So, our initial mission was to scout and monitor enemy activity.

As more troops arrived and as the air war started, we did many recons in force into southern Iraq. Right before the ground war, we rejoined our division and were the spearhead when our division attacked.

After the ground war, my squadron remained there for two months. We once again patrolled the border areas while the most of our division left and went back to Hood. We arrived back at Hood that June but were given quite the welcome home.
