Smoking

Did anyone else think they REALLY overdid the smoking in this movie? Don't get me wrong - I don't have anything against smoking but it seems like they didn't go more than 30 seconds at a time without showing someone smoking.

The only other movie I saw like that was Constantine, and at least there the smoking had point to it. Was it supposed to be symbolic or something or did everyone in the late 1950's smoke 3+ packs a day?

Well in the 50's people smoked like there's no tomorrow so it's not out of place (it just shows how much times have changed). In fact, during that time doctors believed it was healthy to smoke (relieved stress). And not to sound like I'm propogating a stereotype but Italians were notorious smokers, then even more so.

I agree with jimmy. At this time, in this culture, people smoked like chimneys. I thought it was absolutely realistic. Seems like an odd thing to take exception to

"By God, I heard the crow call my name!" exclaimed Caw.

exactly - though the movie didn't convince me of it's time period at all, they certainly had the smoking part down.

JohnG6: Once again I SERIOUSLY have to question the IQ of the average IMDB commenter. People smoked back then. Watch any TV show/movie. Look through any vintage magazine ad. Don't bore us with your inability to divorce your unimaginative PC views of today from the reality of the past.

Andy Griffith, as Sheriff Andy Taylor, smoked in some of the early episodes of the Andy Griffith Show.....around Opie even. :)

I don't think they overdid because people really did used to smoke a lot. Plus the brothers were pretty stressed out preparing for the dinner and all.
