NO CHEMISTRY!!!!

That casting director really *%&! up! There was NO natural chemistry between Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson. Every single scene between them was totally akward, when they kissed it was hard to understand why. Totally devoid of passion. I think they were doing their best but it just wasn't there.

You know, I totally agree. I have seen this movie million times, and love it. But they have very little chemistry. Didn't they see this when they screen tested them?

I'm like, come on Mary, this is a romance story, kiss him! They kissed on top of Lewis' place, but after they made love and she came out the next morning...what was that? Didn't the director cleary see that when he went to go kiss her, she totally turned her head? I mean come on, should of been, CUT! take two....

All of their kissing was forced. BUT, this was still a heart felt movie and I can relate to how Mary (Lisa) felt. If all guys could be like Lewis..totally sweet....and giving..... but to dream...... :)

I agree - I think Mary Stuart Masterson was excellent in this role - and Christian Slater wasn't bad, either - BUT, together they had no chemistry. It would have been a much better movie if we'd been able to feel that connection.

OK, but let's think about the situation. Lisa had a rotten childhood and was unable to connect. Even if at one level she liked Lewis, I think she was supposed to play a part of someone conflicted in romance. So I took her in ability to totally commit to a romantic scene to be intentional. If two people have had really rough events/pasts mess them up emotionally, might they not have trouble "connecting." Perhaps rather than poor acting, it was actually superb acting. We were supposed to see two people being awkward with intimacy. Both of them had spent years re-directing their love, Lisa to her job, Lewis to making others happy more or less anonymously (ie by delivering flowers that others ordered). Just my opinion.

Rizdek makes a lot of sense, I didn't think of it that way. Maybe it's a mix of intention and bad acting. I watched this movie for the first time last night and couldn't get my head around the lack of connection between the characters in their interactions, they seemed so... wrong together.

reply

I guess you could look at it that way, but honestly when you go to watch a movie, you DO want to understand how a couple could end up together. And as much as I'm desperately in love with my sweet beloved Mary Stuart Masterson, the lack of chemistry is incredibly off-putting. There was more chemistry between Watts and Duncan the Skinhead! I don't think it was so much in the directing just as the chemistry thing - Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman sure fizzled out on screen.
I don't think it's the bad acting thing - we all know the two of them are pretty good in other movies. I guess onscreen chemistry's really just a thing you have absolutely no control over.

You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you

i love this movie, and i love Christian Slater...but I don't like her all that much. There was no natural chemisty between them...i know everything was supposed to be awkward in the beginning but towards the middle and end, she should've been more open to him...very weird. i think she was just an odd character in this.

Miss you Heath...you are my

Agreed. I totally cannot get into this movie because there is NO chemistry and both their personalities are ... BLAH ... in this thing. ~yawn~

reply

Agree 200%. And is it just me, or it seems like Lisa and her girl friend had more chemistry than with Christian Slater?

I don't intend to be offensive, but I have to defend my opinions.

reply

Okay from previous viewing of Mary Stuart Masterson she generally an awkward actor i dont know if its from her preception of the character but its quite flat the chemistry between...I guess i expected it to have a little more of a spark...

reply

I agree with rizdek on this.

I think Lisa was still feeling awkward with the new found romance and intimacy.

reply

The characters and roles were really well written, and I understand that Lisa is supposed to be wary of love, but it just seemed like she didn't like him at all. It wasn't a matter of the character being scared or anything, MSM just had no connection to CS.

reply

I totally disagree. They both played it well. It was SUPPOSED to be like that because of all of Lisa's problems.

reply

Yeah I was not into Mary Stuart Masterson at all.

Like why couldn't they have put Gillian Anderson in this flick instead? That would have been cool.
