Might be a glitch. There are boards that date back to '03, yet still have more topics on the first page.

IMDb apparently cleans out its boards every so often, to save disk space. 40 million members. Lots of traffic.

It's not a glitch. IMDb deletes certain posts that aren't all that active every so often. Check out threads for other popular movies like Matrix or Starship Troopers for example. They have one or two pages worth of posts, and literally hundreds of thousands of people post there. I know this coz a lot threads that I started have vanished too.
There's a lot of traffic on this site and IMDb has to some spring cleaning every so often, so as not to waste space with inactive threads.
