Ferdy

How do you feel about Ferdy not being in the upcoming special episode? Personally, while I liked his character and the way he eventually got an amusing revenge on Miles I did find him a bit monosyllabic and frustrating at times. He never really felt like part of the gang, just a replacement for Jason Hughes. He did have an interesting storyline though--it was interesting to see a non-stereotype gay character.

They are using the fact that Ferdy has died to explain his absence, and it is the main reason they are all getting back together again. Loved his character though, a complicated one!

reply

As the rest wasn't complicated... :D

True, he tends to be taciturn, but this is an integral part of his charismatic appeal and demonstrates the series' powerful use of 'pure cinema' (or 'pure television'?) - conveying emotions by the skilful, wordless use of filming, editing and acting.

Ferdy's ineloquence (and perhaps his frustration at this) probably explains some of his dialogue-free physical behaviour - such as punching Miles, smashing the headlights of his ex-fiancee's lover's car, or roaring off from Lenny's sister's house. The character probably feels unable to deal with his problems in the form of speech.

At other moments, his (and other characters') facial expressions and body language are the equivalent of many lines of script - a tribute to Ramon Tikaram's acting and the skilful camerawork/editing, and showing that silence can be more impactful than conversation.

reply

Well he's very silent now. He's dead.

Ferdy was one of my favorites so I was disappointed he wasn't in the reunion but then the reunion was crap so maybe its better for the character he wasn't. Incidentally he was bisexual not gay.

I wonder if the idea was even emtertained that the character would NOT have died, but been part of the reunion, only that the actor couldn't/wouldn't return to play him. I was more disappointed to not see Kira again. Perhaps the storyline all along was to bring together just the core group and include no supporting players. Who can say?
If Kira, Ferdy, Graham, even Rachel or O'Donnell had been included perhaps This Life+10 wouldn't have sucked so much.

This is an ancient thread but I've been watching all the second series online recently and am starved for conversation on this awesome series, so will throw in my two cents!
I don't think it's fair to say that Ferdy felt like nothing but a replacement for Jason Hughes' character. There was quite an unhurried overlap between the introduction of Ferdy and the departure of Warren, so it wasn't as though in the same episode that Warren left, they bashed this new character into the mix. It happened in quite an organic, unforced way.
Also, the nice twist was that Ferdy- whilst quite a frustrating character- was very well written, and was actually a great new figure to introduce to the mix because he was the polar opposite of Warren, and therefore there was no danger that he would simply end up seeming like a second Warren. Whereas Warren was the poster boy for communication, sensibility and nineties psychobabble, Ferdy was grunting and monosyllabic and barely communicated a single emotion by talking- it was all through his expressions and actions. The device of Warren's therapist meant that Warren's storyline was punctuated with a sort of personal, eloquent commentary. With the introduction of Ferdy, that commentary gave way to far angrier, non-vocal scenes of self-expression in the form of Ferdy's occasional violent outbursts.
