I can't believe how much of a feckless loser Egg is..

Don't you just want to kick some life into this guy? What an insipid wimp he is. No wonder Milly wandered onto O'Donnell.

reply

Egg is just a guy who went to uni and studied the wrong subject for years and didn't relaise it until he'd left. Many people have done likewise.

Egg is the centre of the whole thing as he's probably the most honest character in the show.

Kind of better to have your career/life direction crisis then than at the more traditional middle age crisis when you may have family depending on you. Post uni is actually a good point to take stock of your future, rather than follow on down a route you chose (or that chose you) before you had some exposure to independent life. He annoyed me, but I sympathised.

I like him, he's honest and friendly, moody too, just needs time to find out what he wants.

When I watched it the first time round (when it was on originally) I would have agreed with the idea of Egg being a loser. But having had a crisis of career reently and deciding I want to spend my life doing something different (although I wasnt to get into law not escape it) I do totally understand where he's comong from.

As for Milly - not a bad character, and although she is a bit dull there is something likeable about her - but I never felt she was right for Egg - even when they were supposed to be the perfect couple.

"what I said about you was true too, only I shouldn't have said it"

Hi

Egg annoys me, I find him a bit of a loser, but he made quite a brave decision and obviously lacks the self-confidence to go into what he wants to do.
I like Milly, she is grounded and just does what she has to do. She seems weirded-out by the Egg thing (sorry, have only seen those repeats on BBC2, so dont know what happens next!) and doesnt seem to know hw to handle it. telling him "I just want you to be happy" is obviously not the best way though...
I liked that scene where sings "Everything I do.. I do it for you" in the bathroom. It's like... I wasnt expecting that from her!

I can really sympathise with Egg after going through a similar period in my life. He's completely frustrated with not knowing what he wants to do or what he wants, but at least he's making an effort now (after the whole gambling thing).

Not a loser? So you'd put up with him sponging off you for God knows how long and spending the housekeeping money on scratchcards and in the bookies? People have to pull their weight in life you know. Do you think I want to work 12 hour shifts and at weekends? Of course I don't but I have to pay my way in life.

Egg was a kind and gentle guy, but he was a sponging layabout.

I take it you're as lazy as Egg is? So you'd quite happily blow other people's money on scratchcards and the horses? Thanks for the 'pretentious twat' jibe, by the way. I happen to think that you have to work and pay your way in life. Yes, by all means have your dreams, but you have to contribute your share while you're doing it.

I have to go now, I need to go and pay £131.00 for my tv licence. Something that people like Egg wouldn't give a thought to. After all, someone else'll always pay it, won't they?

P.S, Yes, I have been unemployed but unlike Egg it wasn't voluntary. You know what? I took immediate steps to make sure I didn't stay unemployed. I didn't spend any time in bookies either....

You've got it all wrong stephen-alford1: Egg is not lazy - he was eager to find work, but wanted to do something he found enjoyable, and there's nothing wrong with that. Sounds to me like you're just extremely bitter about the hours you work and the job you do because you don't enjoy it, and are deeply envious of anyone who doesn't go through this experience day in, day out. Egg did not enjoy being out of work, was out of work for a relatively short period of time, and was glad to start work in the cafe - so glad, in fact, that he was willing to risk being in debt in order to keep the place going. That's not lazy is it?.

Also, the fact he was gambling on the horses wasn't entirely a sign of bad character either: the main reason he wanted to come home with a big win was so that he could treat Milly by taking the weight of her shoulders, and to her feel he was worth something. This didn't work out of course, but he made good by working very hard in the cafe.

Yeah agree. Egg was quite an annoying character for me at the beginning when he was whinning and not knowing what he wants. But it got better in the end. Won't call him lazy or loser.

I like Milly at the beginning because she's a solid character but then she got very irritating... to a level which I just thought she's ruining the show. Her petty rows with Rachel is just annoying. Thought she doesn't deserve Egg!

I have been spending some my summer holidays watching my old This Life videos. I loved Egg from This Life. I was only 14 when the show was first shown but I had the biggest crush on Egg he was honest and had the bollocks to change his career even though he seemed to drift for a while. It was Milli who i hated this was a dull boring bitch and I never understood why her and Egg were together??? and still shocked when they were married on this life + 10. Even at 14 I knew that O'Donell was a creepy minger and still is lol

reply

I think Egg was a loser - but a good hearted one - in series 1 and at the beginning of series 2 but he got his act together when he started working as a cook. The thing was it was after he became more responsible that Millie started cheating on him. If she had done that when he was being lazy and irresponsible I would have understood a bit more though it would still have been wrong.

Egg isn't a loser! As a solicitor who works with highly qualified tossers day in day out - I admire his honesty! Maybe some of you are too impressed with those uptight barristers!

reply

He is a loser, but a loveable loser. I can understand all those bits about finding yourself, and all that. But he is so insecure, and he really doesn't have a clue about anything. What I have the hardest time to accept, is all the lies. And the others are so afraid of confrontations nobody confronts him about it. Not even Anna or Miles. He lied about filling in the job application form, he lied about the progress of him writing the book, he gambled all the money away he collected from the others to make supper for them, and then he lied about being mugged. Yes, he is likeable, but he needs a good going over. Somebody ought to spank him, severly, with a big plank. Like "Get a grip of yourself! For *beep* sake!"

reply

Egg was far and away my favourite character. He summed up what it's like to be twentysomething and feeling like you have no direction. He was a really likeable, faithful, easy going lad who never had a bad word to say about anybody.

How was he a lazy loser? Just because a person spends a bit of time being a certain way that doesn't define who they are. He wasn't unemployed for long and once he found something to be passionate about he was working all hours to make it happen. He was on a journey and in the end he found what he loved.

In the reunion episode he was a best selling authour, result!

reply

"He was on a journey..."

No, that's what he thought he was. What he was doing, was living a big grand lie of self delution. He lied so much about himself, he ultimately began to believe the lies he told. And that's why he needs some spanking.

"In the reunion episode he was a best selling authour, result!"

I haven's seen it, as it is nowhere to be found. I've tried to search the internets for it, but it simply isn't there. I would cut off my big toe just to get my hands for it, because I have seen the two seasons, but not the stand-alone ten years after reunion special. Do you know how frustrating it is not to get closure on this series? i don't even know what's happening to them, and I'm not sure I wanna know if I can't see it for myself. But thanks anyway for sharing.

No way. Egg is gorgeous looking, kind hearted, funny and honest. He deserved better than Millie and it's not his fault he didn't know what direction his life was going. Happens to the best of us. At least he tried and didn't end up a dole scrounger.I was glad he was happy in the reunion episode (even though it was a bloody poor show)
