Why did Warren disppear for most of the longer 2nd series? was it his choice or was it just the way the show was wrote, the show is always remembered as being about Miles, Anna, Milly, Egg and Warren but the truth is ferdy was in it more than warren

The character of Warren went off on a world tour at the beginning of the 2nd series. He had been charged with gross indecency (for cottaging) and assault of a police officer. The charge of assault was thrown out of court because the police officer was able to ascertain in a police line up that it wasn't Warren who assaulted him. He was fined £50 for the gross indecency charge. Anna defended him in court because Milly was afraid to jeopardise her position in the solicitors firm.
As a result of the negative publicity in the local newspapers, he was under pressure from the solicitor's company that he worked for (Moore, Spencer, Wright) and specifically from that old leech that Milly slept with, O'Donnell to take a leave of absence. He left the Company (with four weeks salary as a gratuity) with the intention of heading to San Francisco. However, as a result of the gross indecency charge, he was unable to get an entry visa to the States. Therefore, he opted to go to Australia. The others in the house got a postcard later in the second series from Morroco saying that he had been there for three weeks enjoying the sun, sea and sand. He arrived back at Miles and Francesca's wedding as the fight was kicking off.

I remember seeing Jason Hughes interviewed at the time and he left because he had commited himself to a stage play with a group of friends.
shareWhatever the reason was, it was absolutely inspired - not because Warren isn't in it, it's a shame he's not in a way - but because Ferdy was a great character in his own right, and because of having Warren coming back at the end after such a massive gap - I still remember watching that last episode and thinking ... "Oh my God, isn't that Warren???!" It was truly one of the greatest TV moments ever.
shareI can't remember where I read this but Jason Hughes thought, at the time of filming it, that the second series was too long so he quit. Apparently he was advised to do this as well by 'bad management' (which he's said he now regrets doing).

I have no idea but it would be interesting to know the answer. And even though Warren was my favourite character i still thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the series without him.
When he came back though right at the end of the last episode i wished we'd seen a bit more of him as he looked gorgeous with his short haircut ;o)
