The first time I watched the show I thought Rachel was a bitch. This time around I actually liked her. Milly treated her appallingly from day one, and never gave her a chance.
But the million dollar question is - did she knowingly let on to Egg about Milly and O'Donnell, or was it innocent?
I believe it was deliberate, because she tells Egg that Milly sent her to find him. There is no way that could be true, as Milly had just told Rachel that she didn't like her and didn't want her in the house.
So even though I feel sorry for Rachel and am mostly on her side in her "collision course" with Milly I think she acted like a total bitch at the wedding. However bad Milly had been to her that was a horrible thing to do, for Egg to hear about her affair in that way, in the middle of his best mate's wedding.
What do other people think? Is Rachel evil, or nice?
I think it was very well played by the writers as it isn't really clear throughout whether Rachel is a bitch or whether it is a reaction against Milly. The only time she does something that can definitely point to her as being a bitch is when she told Egg about Milly and O'Donnell but that was after a Milly told her that she didn't like her in no uncertain terms!
There are deliberately a lot of gaps in the stories in This Life allowing the viewer to fill them in themselves - it was simply great television.
Agreed - when I started watching it again, I remembered how much I hated Rachel the first time I watched it. Actually, she wasn't nearly as bad as I'd remembered - but I think her actions were deliberate. She'd been badly treated by Milly and it was a reaction to that, or at least that's how it seems to me...
I also could never understand why Milly had an affair, obviously I was too young to realise at the time how much of an idiot Egg was!
rachel is a bitch. but then again, so is milly. i rather feel that each of them saw a bit of themselves in the other which is why they didn't get along. egg didn't deserve what either of them did. ~Å~
i always liked rachel, her and milly were just to similar to get on. But she definatley knew what she was doing when she told egg which gave her character a bit of a bitchy edge
She definitely did it deliberately. Her immediate reaction when Milly catches up with her is to deny she did it on purpose - it totally smacks of guilt. Milly and Rachel's relationship was quite interesting. At the time I kind of admired Milly, and thought that Rachel was a sly wagon. She'll always be a sly wagon, but I don't think Milly could afford to feel superior or wronged. She had it coming.
Milly admits to the therapist that she hates Rachel but doesn't know why. Clearly, if Milly did not have this irrational dislike of Rachel, then she would have been perfectly civil to her and they may even have become friends.
I think it was quite a good storyline, I'm sure most people have come across someone in real life that they do not take to at all but cannot actually pinpoint why. So it may be irrational, but it is human nature and we are not in control of our feelings towards others.
I think by the time of the wedding, Rachel could not take any more from Milly (she even tried to make polite conversation at the reception and Milly just let rip at her).
Until the final episode of series 2, when her grassing to Egg must surely be calculatedly mischievous (but an understandable reaction to Milly's overt rudeness), Rachel always seems thoroughly sweet and genuine. I never understood her critical reputation as a scheming villain, nor why Milly took such a vehement, apparently irrational dislike to her - apart from maybe feeling threatened, territorial or jealous when this apparently-perfect junior colleague seems to be taking over Milly's place and compromising her status both in the office and the house.
However, as alluded to in a posting above, it does become clearer in the scene where Milly visits a psychiatrist. The key line seems to be when Milly, having unequivocally vented her despising of Rachel by telling the psychiatrist she worked with somebody she really can't stand (or words to that effect), says Rachel is one of those people who is always right - even when she is wrong.
The camerawork and editing are fascinating in Rachel's early scenes, when she and Milly first meet. The extreme close-ups of their heads during the faltering dialogue accentuates their contrasting features and colouring(especially Rachel's round forehead) and creates a chilly, awkward, unsettling atmosphere - presumably designed to convey Milly's instinctive dislike.
I just re-watched the series. I remember the first time I saw it I could work out what Rachel was up to. I kept going back and forth about whether I liked her or not or if she was being conniving. On this recent viewing I think that she was a decent person who was trying to keep her head above water with the constant bitchiness from Milly. It wasn't until the last moment after Milly had finally told Rachel what's what that she had had enough. Yes it was a bitchy thing to do, but I think Milly had it coming. However it hurt someone else, not just Milly, so that’s really bitchy. And we know she told Egg intentionally as when Milly strides in Rachel know what’s going on and says "it wasn't me!" Yeah sure!
I think Rachel was a very manipulative character who put on a sweet facade. Before Millie punched her she said "It wasn't me" which meant she knew exactly what she was doing and it was a vile thing to do to Egg. I agree Millie wasn't always that nice to Rachel but Rachel did wind her up a lot as well.
Rachel, for the most part tried to get along with people, Milly, quite often behaved in an unacceptable fashion, and was pretty nasty to Rachel in various ways from the get go. There is little excuse for what Rachel did, as she hurt Egg, for that she should be condemned rather than for doing anything to Milly.
It was however quite simply revenge, she had tried and tried but no matter what Milly simply didn't like her.
She is a manipulative bitch. She is false, and she's devious. She is manipulating all over the place, to move herself into Millys position. As an assistant, she is clearly usurping Millys authority, to make herself look more favourable. As the saying goes, with friends like that....
She did it deliberatly. Millie didnt like her and didnt want to live and work with her, she saw her for what she was and i think she did tell O'donnel about warren being hung over not kira on day one and millie sused her and knew she was lying about kira which is why she intensly disliked her.
Rachel told egg to get back at millie, we know rachel did it becuase the first thing she said to millie as millie approached her before punching her out was I didnt do it / it was'nt me - how would she know what millie was about to say if she didnt do it.
She was a bitch and ultimatly she wrecked the house relationship. And it was a a perfect ending when millie gave her the smack she deserved.
I just finished this series (in a solid week!), and one thing I love about it is you can relate and understand each character, at some point, and hate them at another... Kinda like real life (more or less).
I think she was naive, and she knew it would cause trouble. But maybe not how much trouble it would. I dunno, I've known plenty of boys and girls like her--and I can't say I haven't acted the same (but not to such a detrimental extent).
Deliberate and I'm surprised it could be questioned. She had valid reasons not to like Milly who wasn't much better, but watch the manipulation around other characters, especially when trying to get the room in the house. Everything she did came across as trying to get people to like her.
If she was an American teen, she'd be the one trying to befriend the 'mean girls' by use of gifts and opportunities just so she could be meaner than any of them!

Oh, I definitely agree that Rachel deliberately did it - she was certainly provoked by Milly's behaviour, but this was an intelligent character with highly developed social awareness and ability to read people. She knew exactly what she was doing.
I loved this series the first time around, and it was great watching it again now that I've been in legal practice for a number of years; I related to so much of it. The dynamic between Rachel and Milly was SO close to home in a lot of ways.
Milly was at times thoroughly unlikeable, and no doubt she saw Rachel as a real threat, but I think it's too easy to dismiss her instinctive dislike of Rachel as "jealousy". I work with several women exactly like Rachel, some of whom I enjoy a chat with, but whom I wouldn't trust out of my sight. I've worked with others where I can't put my finger on it, but there's something about them that I just can't stand: I try to like them, I want to like them, but there's a "but" that I can't get past. Rachel immediately identified Milly as not only someone to model herself on, but to compete with. Ambition of course is a good thing, but Rachel struck me as the classic embodiment of "Golden Girl/Boy Syndrome" - we have it at work, the people who get promoted at a rapid rate because management thinks the sun shines out of their proverbials, more often than not over people who are just as if not more talented, have worked harder and for longer, but who get taken for granted because they don't play the game.
The common thread is the kissing up to management and colleagues, often "accidentally on purpose" dropping other colleagues in it when they make a mistake or something (I was also convinced Rachel at least hinted to O'Donnell about Warren's hangover, for instance), the manner that is just too sweet, the way of starting conversations to fish for gossip or confidences (so that someone might inadvertently give away something that could come in useful, the overweening ambition and competitiveness (Rachel's speeches about feminist sisterhood and so on made me laugh - she may have consciously believed in it, and I don't think she was necessarily evil, but she would sell her own grandmother to get a promotion if she had to).
The actress who played Rachel did it absolutely brilliantly - the perfect balance of manipulativeness and charm. I loved the fact that all of the major characters were flawed in some ways - each could be really obnoxious, but it made them all the more real and endearing for that.
Am watching series 2 at the mo, first time since it was last aired on BBC2 in the run up to +10. I agree - Rachel is not as sweet and innocent as she seems. The scene where she slags Millie off in the bathroom and calls her anal says it all. She isn't as nice as she makes out. Having said that, I think Millie can be an uptight bag as well!
But yeah, beware of Rschel types more than Millies in the office - at least Millie isn't two-faced. (Though I guess having an affair with the boss is two-faced!)
Just rewatching for the first time as well. We don't get much of a backstory with Rachel. She is certainly sly and manipulative but how much of that was insecurity and how much was malovance is not clear.
Oh no doubt it was on purpose. She wanted to tell Egg about Milly and O'Donnell. I found Rachel very sickly sweet and manipulative, definiately not to be trusted. Having said that, Milly is an unfriendly, cold witch and was not particularly friendly or welcoming to Rachel from day one and I think Rachel picked up on that straight away. In a nut shell, I think both of them were as bad as each other.
"What, you don't like rice? Tell me Michael, how could a billion Chinese people be wrong?"
It was obvious that Milly was a dishonest little szhi.te long before Rachael appeared on the scene. It was obvious that she was using Egg, that was was doomed when he dropped out and she'd do it duplicitously. Rachael was everything Milly wasn't. Grassing her was revenge after lots of provocations.

Rachel was a fascinating character to me, I just re watched the second series. Theres no doubt in my mind that it was delibrate at the wedding, considering Milly had just given her a tongue lashing it doesnt make sense for Rachel to then find Egg and say Milly asked her to look for him. However, if you watch from the whole series, who can blame her? Milly was an unfriendly cow to her from day one. She says she doesnt know why she didnt like her but to me it was obvious. Rachel was pretty, good at her job and was taking on a lot for a junior trainee and over shadowing Milly, espcially when she made such an impression on O'Donnell who Milly had a crush on since series 1. Milly was incredibly threatened by her
I personally thought that Rachel was just a lonely girl looking for friends but maybe I am naive. She was a little inappropriate and unprofessional at times with the comments she made and I admit she was hard to work out, but I cant help but feel that if Milly wasnt so hostile towards her then it neednt have gone down the way it did. I hated Milly, I just didnt think she was a very likable character whatsoever, and although I agree Rachel was malicious to do what she did at the wedding I think Milly pushed her to do it.
Note that no one had a problem with Rachel EXPECT Milly.
From Milly's perspective, Rachel rubbed her up the wrong way despite the fact that Rachel made a number of efforts to be nice to her which were meant with aloofness on Milly's part.
The fact the Milly was flying high on a sense of (false) confidence, led her to be quite rude and dismissive to Rachel at the wedding by telling her what she really thought of her. The fact that Milly was an absolute cow to Rachel that whole time (for no valid reason truth be told) no doubt left Rachel reeling and wanting some payback on Milly.
Rachel was aware of what Milly was up to with O'Donnell and kept her mouth shut but after that confrontation, it was enough ammunition to shoot Milly down when she let "slip" to Egg what was going on. Whilst I don't blame Milly for hitting Rachel after the bombshell was dropped, let's be honest folks, she deserved to be exposed for her cheating ways.
