cape emblem

I'm watching the ep "Absolute Power", and I notice in several clear scenes, Superman is wearing a plain red cape.

Now, we all know that Sup has a yellow on yellow Super emblem on his cape, right?

Is this consistent through this series? I haven't seen enough to know. And if so, why? Just for easier animation?

reply

He doesn't have a yellow S shield on his cape in this series, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, or Superman: Brainiac Attacks. The reason why is because it would have been too much work to consistantly animate.

reply

As opposed to contantly drawing every frame anyway?

reply

I don't think you get it. This saved a whole lot of time because in each frame they could draw the cape and then just ignore it, instead of spending extra time carefully drawing in the symbol so that it "animated" correctly.
And in any event, I can't think of any other superhero who wears his emblem on both his front AND his back!

Supermodels...spoiled stupid little stick figures mit poofy lips who sink only about zemselves.

Spider-Man does.

Hey, it's unique.

reply

I like the yellow 'S' on the cape.

Animators are lazy basturds.

reply

Then donate a few couple of thousands to make them unlazy.

reply

some of you must be from a younger generation.Superman's costume doesn't feel complete without the yellow emblem it's always been a part of his costume.

I'm gonna die unless you kill me!

reply

Actually, you yourself are from a younger generation, manofsteel. Superman's yellow emblem has NOT always been a part of his costume. Hell, Fleischer's Superman in the 40s didn't have it.

In Punk we trust.

reply

Very true Caleb. There was a time when Superman's costume had lots of minor inconsistencies because amazingly no artist could remember exactly how he dressed. The pentagon S-insignia was once a triangle, his boots were once barely there stockings, and when they finally did put the S-emblem on the back of his cape, the color scheme was all over the place from any given mix of yellow & red or yellow & blue.

reply

So when did they first start to draw it on his cape?

reply

"Donate."

I see you thought this reply out very carefully.

reply

In animation, simplicity is everything. The more complex something is to draw, the more difficult it is to animate consistently. Superman's S-shield is already difficult to draw correctly at times, then imagine trying to do it at different angles at a rate of about 24 drawings per second. And now, try drawing on a cape that's constantly flapping in the wind as Superman is flying.

There's a pigeon squashed on the street!
Ew...

reply

IIRC they discuss it on the Box set..

and they say that they omitted the yellow \S/ because it would have been too hard to consistently animate

to those calling animators 'lazy' bear in mind that Every frame of the cape would then need to have the \S/ drawn and colored to match not only Every Other frame, but also adjust for motion, direction, tension et al... whereas a plain Red Cape just needs a few lines

reply

In a turn of events, the capes yellow \S/ Shield has recently been added to some Comic Issues & Action Figures/Collectible Statues in Black...same style of the classic yellow only in black...wonder what that's about.

Wake up. Time to DIE.
