Did anyone else think Lex Luthor was a Black Man?

For the longest time as a child watching this cartoon I had thought Lex Luthor was a black man. Wasn't until I got older I realized my mistake.

But you could see my reasoning.

He was a couple shades darker then Superman, had a deep voice, and those lips.

What surprised me is the actor Clancy Brown plays Mr Crabs, Paralax (G/L flop) and Sgt Zim in Starship Troopers (a great fun funny sci fi social commentary adventure movie). AND General Zartok in Green Lantern TAS.

I never really thought about it, I thought he was maybe Indian or part se asian or latin. I never thought he had a voice that sounded black, and looked more like races I just mentioned. I just thought he was mean.

I just watched "Words Finest" 3 parter, it was funny as hell and Lex's & Jokers treatment of their gals was world class 4 an ass. Over the top but still fun.

Harley and Mercy were great.

oops I saw worlds finest as 3 tv 1/2 hour bits wrong show, but same Lex & all others.

No. But i have a friend who thinks he's black and refuses to believe otherwise.

reply

No.

My ignore list is quite large.

He's based, visually, on Telly Savalas, who was Greek and was usually very tan. The more accurate descriptions would be olive-skinned or Mediterranean, but he would still be classified as causcasian.

I was already grown when this show debuted and I thought Lex was black. Only reason I think differently now is they talk about how people mistakenly thought he was black on one of the DVD commentaries. I'm still not totally sure he wasn't black.

reply

Rest assured, he wasn't. Just look at Steel. That's what a black man looked like in the series. Luthor was as dark as Superman was.

Yeah a lot of times having the defined lips is something you see on black people in cartoons, where as someone like Superman just have the little line to represent his mouth with closed. Since Lex had defined lips I can see where people would make this mistake.

It's often mistaken that Lex was black. Below is from Bruce Timm himself.

Due to Lex Luthor's pronounced lips and tanned skin, several fans mistakingly thought he was African-American. This is due to the Telly Savalas inspiration for his look - the reason for which is that producer Bruce Timm thought of Clancy Brown's take on Luthor as a "cultured thug", the same way he saw Savalas' Blofeld in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Timm's favorite Bond film). Sometimes, the animated Luthor is portrayed as being distinctly darker than the people around him, and sometimes (like the shot in "A Little Piece of Home" where Luthor literally puts his face right into Superman's) his skin color is exactly the same as everybody else. Timm is rumored to quip that his Lex Luthor must "tan easily."

It's amazing how people hang around message boards of movies they don't like

I never thought he was black but he always reminded me of Harvey Dent from the Batman cartoon.

Yo, homie. Is that my briefcase?-Vincent

reply

I do think it's funny people think Lex is black when Clancy Brown sounds the same as Lex as he does as Captain Hadley on Shawshank Redemption.

It's a really easy mistake to make.

But no, I didn't think he was, I just figured he was the kind of vain guy to tan a lot.
