Sailor Stars on DVD

I kept traking Sailor Stars all over the net for any news on official relaese, but no hope.. Nothing indicates that Pioneer or ADV or any others has been able so far to get the rights for an English version.

Thanks God, while doing so I found an on-line anime shopping website which sells (almost like original.. or is it an original Japanese version?) English subtitled DVD boxset of Sailor Stars. If you are interested check http://www.surf4vcddvd.com/

Sailor Moon Sialor Stars has never been released on DVD, in the States or Japan.

In the States: Totally unreleased, not available on any format.

In Japan: Available on VHS and laserdisc (LD). Both are out of print and rare, especially the latter.

If you're gonna look for the original Japanese Stars LDs, I would suggest second hand online shops eg Anime Jungle.. they have it periodically.

Right now, I have the first 3 seasons on 3 LD boxsets.. they look so nice since they're so big and come with great box art.. can't wait to get the box set for this season :P

Still you can get it on DVD from the Malaysian website indicated previously.

Most likely the DVD subtitles, if there are any, are going to make little to no sense whatsoever. Unfortunately that seems to be the case with hard-to-find subtitled anime, so if you don't have a problem with Japanese, go with it, but I would say not to expect good subtitles.

There is a subtitle, and it's really good. The whole version is almost like orginal. If this version is copied from another source, it maight br copied from the original laser disk version.

They actually have Stars in Japan on DVD. =)

Yeah that's what I was thinkin'...There's no way such a popular show, especially the last season, wouldn't be released on DVD in Japan. Also, I swear I saw Sailor Stars DVD American version being sold at a book fair.

Sailorstars has NEVER been released on DVD, they only have up to volume 4 os Sailormoon SuperS on DVD on Japan, and througought this year they may complete the SuperS series, Sailorstars may be available on Japan on 2006. As for boxsets that may be available online, fairs, specialty shops, etc are bootlegs (or illegal) copies produced in Hong Kong. They are copies of the Japanese Laserdics but put on DVD instead. They are not original anywhere but in hong kong, and although they are subtitled, subtitle translations were made by people whose mother language isn't english...

No american company has plans to dub or release Sailorstars in America since TOEI will not license it to anyone because of the Sailor Starlights infamous gender change.

reply

Since Stars was never dubbed into English, there would not be an English audio track on a Stars DVD collection.

If you're interested, you can almost always find Stars DVD sets on eBay. They usually go for about $30, which is pretty reasonable for a boxed set. Of course, they're fanmade, but considering it's the only way to see Stars besides downloading the episodes and it's never going to be licensed, it's really the only way to go if you want to see it on DVD.

Ah, fandubs. Wasn't really thinking of those. Most of the time they're done pretty poorly and unprofessionally, so getting a fandubbed Stars DVD collection would seem pointless to me.

Who would you propose Ewan McGregor play? He's a bit too old for Mamoru or any of the Three Lights, and I can't think of any other leading male characters. Artemis maybe, but that doesn't seem like a good match to me.

Emma Watson as Usagi...nah. She's an okay actress, sure, but going by what I've seen her in in the past (Hermione in the HP movies), she doesn't seem the carefree, bubbly Usagi type. I also can't imagine her acting in the more emotional scenes near the end of Stars.

How do you think a fandub would deal with the genderbending Starlights? Male actors for their civilian Three Lights roles, and females for their Starlight roles? That would seem difficult to get used to, besides being a hassle.

I heard that SailorStars is going to be released on DVD in Japan on September 21st. Don't know where I heard it, but I'm pretty sure it's true. As for Stars coming to the States... don't count on it. If the new book they just released over here does good, then we might have a chance if they think there is still intrest in the States.

Also, if I remember correctly, Disney was the one who had the rights to distribute "Spirited Away" in the United States, which is why it came to theaters after it won the Oscar for best animated picture. The commercials mentioned it was being distributed (not made) by Disney, and this way they weren't cheated out of their Oscar since that was the year Lilo and Stitch lost...sorry, just adding my 2 cents.

I bought one of the Chinese import sets from eBay, I think it only cost me about £10. (At least I think it's one of those sets...) I don't think the subtitles are the best, but they don't seem *too* bad, maybe just a loose translation. However, I figured it was the only way I could see Stars, and since I don't know Japanese, I can't really complain!
