The Spellman family

Does anyone else find it weird that whenever Zelda and Hilda talked about their family they discussed themselves, their mother, their other siste (Vesta I think), even that Hilda may have been adopted and that someone was turned into pigs (I can't remember specifics), but they NEVER mention their brother - Edward, obviously Sabrina's father??

I always found that weird too. There was an episode where he came back though to see them all. For some reason I think Hilda and Zelda are much older than he is (along with Vesta), so that may be why he isn't included as much. He also took an academic lifestyle, choosing to live/work in the magic book, where the other 3 sisters chose a life of luxury.

I too think Sabrinas father is very young. For a witch/warlock, that is. Probably not more than 100 years, very likely even much less.

After he left Sabrinas mother, he fell in love with a much younger witch, too. Another hint he's not very old yet.

I always found their references to the family weird too. In almost all cases where Hilda and Zelda reference their childhoods/younger days, they speak as if they were the only two siblings. I think there might be one reference to Vesta, following her appearance on the show, and obviously there are several references to Sabrina's dad, but they don't talk about him as their brother. It would make sense, though, if maybe Vesta is significantly older than Hilda and Zelda, and Edward is significantly younger.

i didn't realise they were so much older than him. maybe they didn't grow up together and he made his own way. it's been quite a few years since i've seen this series

I always assumed they grew up separately. Like, Hilda and Zelda were off travelling the world doing different things (like working in Welsh mines or in Cowboy Taverns) whilst Edward was still a child which is why he isn't mentioned in childhood memories.

reply

Yeah I think it makes sense for their to be a considerable age gap between the siblings, with Hilda and Zelda having been born more close together.

After all, in the episode "Tick-Tock Hilda's Clock" a big deal is made out of the fact that they need to get Hilda's biological clock back for her to be able to have children, meaning that it's obviously possible for witches to concieve even at 650 years old, so it's possible that Vesta and Edward were born hundreds of years after Hilda and Zelda.

Little people? Who decides they’re so unimportant?

reply

I thought it was implied Vesta is the oldest. Since Vesta is the one who turned their parents into pigs. Which is why they had to adopt them.

Ah yes, I forgot about that! I'd say then that Vesta is the oldest, then Hilda and Zelda, who aren't twins but born very close together, and then Edward.

Good point. The siblings could be hundreds of years apart. And being as witches seem to age normally before they grow up, it's likely the girls didn't grow up with Sabrina's dad at all. They could feel more like aunts or even grandparents in some ways than siblings to him. Heck, when your immortal, decades would probably slip by like months. They maybe didn't even really meet him until he was grown.

Vesta may have been a little closer to their age, like just enough that they kind of share some memories with her from growing up.

The Sabrina wiki page states that Edward is the oldest of the four siblings.

I'm not sure where they got this information from.

Also, Hilda and Zelda seemed to have always been together. The other siblings (except maybe Vesta) might have grown up separately.

That's been my understanding of it too. My mother and her siblings have a large spacing between them. Three kids born first then 8yrs later three more. By the time the fifth and sixth kids were born the first two were already in college. So most likely Hilda & Zelda's childhood memories are more about themselves together than the ones who have moved out.
