Why rated R

I have two questions. It says "The Legacy" movie is rated "R" for terror violence and sexuality. Is the show itself also rated "R"? Or TV/MA?
I was also curious if the show always has the same characters each time. Or is every episode a totally different story with different characters?

The pilot was rated so high because it had quite graphic sexual scenes. The rest of the show is not as bad.

Ya, the pilot did have some scenes I don't think could make it onto network TV, such as some nudity and sex between Racheal and the demon plus the birthing scene where Racheal gives birth to the demon was somewhat graphic. The language however is very tame (only two minor swears) and the blood is very very limited. As for other shows, so far, The Tenent had the f word and a brief scene of bloodied nude bodies, and Man in the Mist had very brief nudity. I will keep an update on content as I watch more shows.
