Sadly, there have many many real-life cases similar to that of Andrea Yates. Yates husband believed in the Quiverfull which perscribes that Christians have as many children as they possibly can so that there are more Christians in the world.
Andrea Yates suffered from extreme postpartum psychosis and her and her husband were both warned that having any more biological children would cause a relapse of it, but her husband insisted that they would have "as many children as God wanted" them to. According to court transcripts she refused sex on the grounds that she didn't want more children for fear of her psychosis returing and her husband raped her. Which no doubt added to her trauma.
Other women with postpartum psychosis in the Quiverfull movement have done things similar to Yates. There's one awful story of one women setting herself on fire when she learned she was pregnant.

That's horrifying. I had no idea her situation was that bad. I've never heard of the Quiverfull, but it doesn't surprise me. The churches of my youth were pretty twisted.
