how can Gerald be Arnold's best friend?

I know that Arnold has an infinite amount of tolerance, but why is Gerald his best friend? You know, he always transmits him pessimism, he doesn't support him in any of his problems, he never supported an of his crushes, when he fights for a cause, he always tells him to forget it and accept that it won't get better... I mean, why? How does Arnold consider his best friend someone as negative as Gerald?

Are you kidding? Gerald is always there for Arnold when it counts. Gerald is a chill person who doesn’t join in on negativity and bullying when kids like stinky and Sid are acting like jerks.

Gerald didn’t support Arnold’s crushes b/c they were unrealistic, and he had a point. Ruth turned out to be boring, unfriendly, self-absorbed, and no way interested in him. Lila friend-zoned him countless times. The substitute teacher is a grown woman, so it obviously wouldn’t work out!
