Sharlto Copely

Let me just say I really like Trevor, he has off days but most episodes I actually laughed audibly. There is a lot of hate here for him which I think is a bit over the top.

But I came here to say wtf was up with the Sharlto Copely interview?! It's was so awkward with all the apartide talk!! I think perhaps Trevor was uncomfortable and didn't want him on. The tension was palpable. And the heavy cuts and Sharlto's running off the stage, very odd.

I get that Trevor probably has no power to prevent certain people becoming guests but if he couldn't get through an interview with him (which is understandable) then Sharlto shouldn't have been a guest.

As far as running off the stage it's actually fairly common on the show especially with entertainment guests who are more used to doing press, audiences, and well walking off stages. John was constantly telling people to sit down/stay, or shooting up to shake their hands when he saw them get up, or not calling attention to it if he didn't catch them right off the bat. Trevor is just terrible.

In the same vein if Trevor really had a point to make he evidently didn't come close to managing it. I think he just superficially tossed Apartheid in, and was completely unprepared when it threw the interview off balance. You say it's understandable but it's actually not Trevor might not have the influence to say 'I don't want to promote a white South African on my show it's an ensemble cast have em send someone else from the movie', but not only does that seem unlikely it's a six (three?) minute interview for an upcoming light comedy it's not exactly being asked to give a bro hug to Ian Smith.

Trevor's half white, it really doesn't make sense that he'd feel uncomfortable or resent having a white south African on the show (especially given that Sharlto discussed how he was always against apartheid and his first vote was to free Nelson Mandela from prison). Would he object to having his dad as guest too?

Well since under Apartheid his parent's marriage was illegal, and his mother was jailed & fined, his father moved back Switzerland, and his mother was later shot (she lived) by a stepfather it's really not at all hard to imagine Trevor might have a bit of a chip on his shoulder about the whole thing much less for less directly personal reasons.

Of course i'm not, nor was I, suggesting that he actually does have such a bias or that it would be so ingrained he couldn't plug a movie for a handful of minutes with a white South African. Hence the words proceeding and following your quote as well the quote itself as supposition to Strhe's observation about Trevor.

Noah's opening line was: "Real quick, personal story. This man, I mean, like, the first time I was exposed to you was in 'District 9'. You look very different now, you look very handsome, and having less racism."

Forget about the fact that it doesn't make a lot of sense ("having less racism" as a comment on someone's looks??? what "personal story"?), the real question here is: WTF?

Noah must have thought about this opener, because he clearly had prepared that greeting, but seriously, this is what he came up with? What did he even mean to say? Openly accuse his guest of racism right off the bat? Is there anything that doesn't reduce to some race nonsense in Noah's universe?
