Ireland/UK DVD

I am an Irish Ballykissangel fan with a Region 2 DVD player. When - if ever - will a Ballykissangel DVD be released here, does anyone know? Region 1 DVD won't work on my player. Can anyone help?

reply

My mum is a huge BallyK fan and is extremely disappointed that the DVDs were released only in the states!
I wish I could answer your question. It appears that quite a few people are disappointed at this!

I just watched this DVD and I have to tell you that you have not missed much. I as so frustrated. It was only six episodes. This is such a wonderful series. I wish we had it on TV here. Here being the USA. But this DVD is only six episodes. I am very frustrated. I would love to see the whole series. I am familiar with many of these actors having seen them in other UK movies. I am hoping the whole series DVD will be available here too.

The six episodes on the DVD you have watched is a whole series. British TV programmes have much shorter runs than American ones. An average first series of a show in Britain will last six episodes unlike the 22-24 episodes that you getin the States. I think that after the first two series being 6 episodes long, BallyK had a couple of series running at 8 episodes. This is usual over here.

Thank you for the explanation. I really did like the series. I did find another one at the Library and it had a mini-documentary with it. Kind of "The Making of Ballyk" I am trying to get others.
It is interesting that you get only 6-8 episodes in of a show. Does that mean that the television stations play a lot of re-runs or do you have more of a variety. ie lots of different kinds of series running 6-8 weeks each??

reply

The british scheduled tend to contain a lot of soaps (continuing 'dramas')which run continually and are usually on 4 or 5 times a week and also 'reality' shows such as documentary programmes and 'magazine' programmes. It's the main dramas that tend to get the 6 week runs. The number of episodes in a series depends on the programme, some will run for up to 14 episodes. There are also mini-series that run for 3 or 4 hour long episodes. There is a lot of American drama being shown on british TV which has introduced british viewers to the 21-24 episode season.

I think the differences in series length mainly come down to the differences between the way British TV stations and American TV stations are run and paid for.
