When I looked at the listing of actors it list the years they were on the series. Most of them are listed as being on for three or four years. Mostly 1996-1999 However the IMdB lists the series as being from 1996-2001. Did they have a totally different cast for two years?????
This is probably too late to be useful to you, but I'll reply anyway. The original cast lasted three seasons. Then the actors playing Assumpta and Peter left. Later on, in season 5, the actor playing Brian Quigley died suddenly, and the actor playing Ambrose also left. The cast wasn't totally different, they just wrote characters out as needed and brought new characters in. The other secondary characters - Niamh, Siobhan, Brendan, Padraig, Eamon, Liam and Donal, and Father Mac - all stayed till the end as far as I know.
Not at all. Information very useful and now I will definitly have to see if I can get a hold of more of the series. I really enjoyed it. I viewed a some DVD "Extras" where they were interviewing the cast and and one of the cast was explaining how people were writing him angry letters for starting a the fire that killed one of the characters in a fire. I think it was Asumpta. I was shocked but I figured the actor that played that character wanted to move on.
Just found out I was wrong about Niamh, she leaves in the fifth series as well. I didn't know it was out on DVD, I'll have to try and get a hold of it.
I don't remember a house fire, it must have been from after the third series when I more or less stopped watching it. Assumpta didn't die in a fire. If you haven't seen it I won't tell you how she does die :p (only that it made me sooooo angry...)
aargggggggggg..........you little beastie....lol. Now I really have to find the other DVD's to find out.
Just a little side note. I do remember my Mother telling me about the old radio serials. There was one that had been on for years and apparently the popularity was dropping. So they planned an "outting" of some kind. Like a county fair picnic. They put all the principal players on a bus, drove it out of town and over a cliff killing off all the characters. They then picked the story up with all new actors. The police and emergency people, the witnesses that were driving by and saw the bus go over the cliff. It was a great success as they had a whole new set of story lines to follow.
Personally, I don't like building up a liking for a character only to have them kick the bucket for no apparent reason, or because the producers didn't have the nerve to follow through with their storyline.
Incidently, if you happen to check this thread again, do you think you could post it here if you do manage to get your hands on any DVDs? I'd be interested to know whether they're available and in what region, I haven't had any luck finding them so far.
Just out of curosity what region are you in. I am in Indiana, USA. I think the best way to find them would be to check for them on the IMdB. In the upper right hand corner is a link to Amazon.com. It shows what is available in which countrys. Amazon.com is a good place to look as they offer used copies also at a much reduced price.
Ok, thanks. I tend to think of Amazon as just books.
I'm in region 4, btw - Australia. It doesn't matter though, cos I've de-regionised my player. You kind of have to, as they don't do people here the courtesy of releasing everything.
I know what you mean. I want "Twelfth Night" The Trevor Nunn version. I want it on DVD and for several years it was (According to Amazon.com) only available on DVD in Sweeden. Then the DVD became available in the UK. I was going to try to order one from the UK and get a multi-regional DVD player. I just checked and it is now available on DVD here and Canada. I will be trying to get one as soon as possible. Now if I can get Kenneth Branaugh's Hamlet on DVD I will be a very happy person.
There are DVD players here that play multiple regions. They are a bit more expensive to purchase.
I have finally gotten the third series DVD set from the library. Really good. I thought it was wonderful. Maybe this is the storyline that the producers had in mind or perhaps the actors who played Peter and Asumpta got better offers and just did not want to stay another season.
I only got to see the first season, then started watching at a later date. I found out from this site, the reason that Assumpta and Father Clifford left, but what in the world happened to Ambrose? finely1
