closed captions - help?
We are not able to access the closed captions on the Ballykissangel DVD's from seasons 1 through 4. (USA) We've tried 3 different DVD players. Can anyone help us? Has anyone else experienced this problem?
sharesorry, can't help but I have series 4 and I can't access the captions either. Despite what it says on the box (which I think refers only to the series on tv, not the transfer to dvd), there is no special feature of subtitling to turn on. Wish it did, as I can't quite catch all the dialogue.
shareThe may or may not be an option to access the Close Captioning from the DVD menu but I was able to set up the Close Captioning from the Television menu with the Television remote control. Then when the DVD plays the captioning shows automatically.
shareI hope LOVEOPERA gets to read this. WINDWALKERZ is exactly correct. Many times on Region 1 DVDs there are NO subtitling in English *but* if you turn on your "Closed Captioning" via your TV remote control, you can get these to work over the DVD.
However, many times Region 1 DVDs for British shows has NO subtitles in English AND the "closed captioning" feature doesn't even work. Which is both annoying and stupid as everyone knows there are many many many different accents in England, Scotland, Wales, and both Irelands, not to mention Australia and New Zealand, and they are very hard on the Yankee ear to understand.
I watched BallyK on Public TV here in the U.S. which had closed captioning. I have the DVDs available so far but haven't had time to watch them or check out the subtitling/captioning so very glad to read that at least the closed captioning will work.
I still remember with annoyance trying to decipher the Glasgow accent without closed captions on the series "Taggart" (cops in Glasgow), and everyone acknowledges this is one of the most indecipherable accents around the British Isles. I watched enough that the detectives' accents were more refined and/or I got used to them, but the crooks they interrogated which had the worst/best -- depends on your POV -- Glaswegian accents were like mush to me... and at one stage in an interrogation, Taggart says to the perp, "What's the matter, don't you speak English?" I roared at that, going yes, yes, please speak English! (Of course the cop was referring to the back talk from the perp and I was responding to a differnt sort of inaudibility.)
Can't wait to have time to watch my BallyK DVDs WITH closed captioning.
Now now...don't be so hard on em.....I do love all the different accents. We have a couple here in the States that are almost as frustrating to listen to.
