Ambrose

I'm watching Season 4 and my heart is breaking for Ambrose. I'm not liking Niamh right now; not that she was ever my favorite character nor the writers. Ambrose was a good guy, if you were going to through him over you should have made him unlikeable at least just a little.

I liked Ambrose as well, wasn't too happy about what happened to his character.

The way Ambrose was written, he never seemed to be able to shed his uniform even when he was out of uniform. Sure, gardas are always on duty in that they need to be able to respond to an incident; but Ambrose did not seem to have much of a personality other than to be a garda in or out of uniform. He never seemed to be able to let his hair down. He never seemed to click with his wife, seemed to be totally clueless about married life, and did they actually ever have a honeymoon?

Great description. A supporting example: in s1, the ep when he backs out of the wedding for religious reasons. After he makes up with Niamh, Fr Clifford sees him placing a parking ticket on Assumpta's van. Clifford reminds Ambrose what a comfort Assumpta was to Niamh, getting her through the terrible time after her breakup with Ambrose, and esp the day they were supposed to get married.

All Ambrose can do is shrug his shoulders and say, "There's good in everybody, Father." You just want to shout and force him to recognize that he missed the point entirely! But what's the use? Ambrose is a brick wall; there's just no way to get through.

It's true that the writers chose to not give him any personality, but you have to have a screw loose to not see him as the victim here. Who could ever live with a woman lije Niamh? Well, I guess someone with no personality...

reply

The way Niamh was written, it seems she thought the world revolved around her. No consideration for the feelings of others, especially her family.

Ambrose is a victim of a selfish narcissistic wife who was always that way. The character deserved better than to be stuck with a lying cheating partner but welcome to post women's lib
