All those scenes reminded me of a live action Duke Nukem.. All we needed was the pig cops and smaller aliens

Technically it does somehow simulate that look and feel of a shoot 'em up style video game, and i thought the whole opening VR sequence was surreal and quite well directed. Pitty the 'real world' 90% of the movie seems dull in comparison.

I was very surpised by how well it did that, especially since it was made in 1993 when a lot of games were still 2d and sprite based (I think, I was really young). It even showed clipping errors.
