Similar to Demoliton Man

I have always noticed how similar both Virtuousity and Demolition Man were. Police officer, who was imprisoned for questionable reasons, is released from prison to stop an old foe, who now has enhanced abilities, in a futuristic world. Both of the main characters are implanted with some type of tracking device. Even their partners are somewhat similar: women who become simpathetic to the hero, and ends up going against authority to help them. I enjoyed both movies. Just a personal observation. What are your thoughts?

I need to see that movie again. Haven't seen it in years!

Both are favorite movies of mine, but I never noticed the similarities. Great points of observation! :)

I never really clocked on the first time I watched it way back then but when I watched it the other night Crowe's constant sniggering and sheer pleasure in his killing really reminded me of simon phoenix. Then the other similarities became apparent.

Well come to think of it there's another Denzel movie similar to this one. It had John Lithgow as a sadistic killer much like Crowe was in this one. Only the main difference spoiler if haven't seen it is his family is alive in the end. Kevin Pollack in the movie is Denzel partner.

Vengence is a living thing

That would be the movie "Ricochet". I agree that all 3 psycho-killers (Phoenix, Lithgow and Sid 6.7) are all "over the top".

I liked Virtuosity, but I would say that both Ricochet an Demolition Man are better.

reply

I can see the Ricochet comparison. Especially the fights at the end of both films.

Sometimes things are right there, you just don't know it right away

reply

I totally agree. Crowe looks like a happy merry go round dude who couldn't kill a fly.

reply

Yeah... I love the film, but what I love about it most is the potential it had.

reply

You are right, Mr. Jones, glad you noticed that. But which one of them was more fun to watch?

reply

I liked both movies, but I enjoyed the humor of Wesley Snipes' character much more.

Spartan didn't kill them. Phoenix killed them, and then scattered them all over the building. Simon if I am not mistaken started the fire with a cigarette when Spartan got out gasoline.

"The policemen figured it out. The postmen figured it out. But the god damn bus drivers... just... wouldn't... listen."

Simon punctured the barrels of gas before Spartan came in. My guess is that he planned to blow up the place anyway.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses. IMO: Snipes' character was written better than Crowe's (SID sounded silly and pointless in many scenes), Washington did a better than Stallone. The plot of Demolition Man made more sense (the idea that the manager of the company that created SID would have so much control over the operation [up to the point that he'd be given the power to kill Parker] even after he'd shown he cared more about SID than civilians seemed hard to swallow, the notion that the mayor would suddenly care more about killing Parker and totally abandon the effort to capture SID was also unbelievable, and the idea that the police chief wouldn't know about the poison implant but Carter would seemed unlikely too), the female companion as a love interest seemed to fit better but Bullock amounted to comic relief in most of her scenes. And there were many exciting bits of Virtuosity (at least I considered the VR bits [especially the defeat of SID] nice) that were impossible in Demolition Man simply because of the story.

In addition to Lithgow in Ricochet, Snipes in Demolition Man and Crowe in Virtuosity. Allow me to toss Antonio Banderas in Assassins, into the category of awesome, over the top, violent, hilarious, sociopaths.

These are some of the most entertaining villain performances. Characters that allow the actors to go insane and chew the holy hell out of the scenery.

Super cool.

You know why the chicken crossed the road? Because the road crossed the chicken.

Also Lithgow in Cliffhanger. Another hilarious, over the top, villainous performance.

Demoliton Man and Virtuosity are both good sci-fi action movies with very much a same storyline: An imprisoned Ex Cop is released to hunt down a psychotic killer.
